Love the System: Our Favorite RPG Battle Systems

Posted on 09/23/2013 at 07:50 PM | Filed Under Feature

I always liked the interactive nature of the Mario and Luigi games, which took the battle scheme from Paper Mario and extended the dynamic beautifully. Evading and countering via the Brothers' jump and hammer attacks was not only incredibly intuitive, but also faithful to their personalities and movesets seen in other titles.

Ha ha. Yeah, the artist in me is at odds with the business man--what's more important, getting my book read by as many people as possible, or making some money even if it means only getting a fraction of the downloads? But I think the artist in me has the upperhand for now! :-)

Yeah, the book is perfect for her age group. And if she does like it, I wouldn't mind if she wrote a positive review on Amazon! :-)

Vita TV: A Question, A Problem, and A Lot of Potential

Sony will likely adapt at least some games to the PS4 controller's touchpad, but indeed, it won't be a perfect fix.

Either way, I might buy the device primarily for its streaming services (Netflix, Hulu and the like), and simply view the Vita functionality as a nice bonus. Everything did seem easier in the PSP days, though, when the handheld could simply connect to the TV for game playing. Ah well.

New 2DS a Tough Sell for Nintendo

Yeah, due to the capricious nature of the average consumer and some high-profile games coming, the 2DS might indeed succeed despite its inexplicable nature. Seems odd, though, that Nintendo is still putting so much time into the 3-D aspect of its titles, only to discourage a whole base of gamers from actually experiencing it. Really is quite strange.

New 2DS a Tough Sell for Nintendo

I actually agree with much of this editorial, but there's no figuring out the mass consumer when it comes to these things. For example, I actually thought the original Wii was a joke of a console; with no HD, DVD playback, or substantial on-line support, plus a stupid name, I was sure it would be a popular item that first Christmas and then tank substantially. Obviously, I couldn't have been more wrong.

But I was looking at things from the logic of an experienced gamer who can see when something is ill-devised, overpriced, or simply a novelty. And like the author, I, too, see the 2DS as a sort of enigma. But that won't stop Mom, Dad, Grandpa, or Grandma from picking up the relatively inexpensive gadget for Johnny this Holiday.

Perhaps NIntendo's biggest mistake is that this seems like an admission that the orginal 3-D concept was a misstep to begin with. Which it probably was, considering I lose the effect whenever I tilt the screen the slightest bit either direction. But I have to admit, it looks great in Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, and the upcoming Zelda title is also supposed to use 3-D to great effect.

Pity little Johnny won't ever be able to experience it...

Gone Home Review

Sounds interesting--I'm not always sold on having to look for clues and notes in more action-oriented games. For example, I loved Bioshock Infinite, but having to track down every one of those audio logs became irksome. At least in this game, there are no other pretensions--it's simply about collecting scraps of story to continue the overall narrative, and in doing so, the game is more fun and less like a chore.

DuckTales Remastered Review

Posted on 08/23/2013 at 06:57 PM | Filed Under Review

I actually waited until the PS3 "hard copy" appeared at GameStop, which is really just a PS3 case with the sleeve and a Ducktales collector's pin included inside (and a redeemable code for the digital copy, of course). Still, for a huge Ducktales fan like me, it was worth having something tangible to represent the return of one of my favorite NES games.

'Tis true, though, that playing through the title now, the game feels a tad pedestrian in design, with most of the levels more-or-less playing the same. But this is a remake, after all, and as far as those go, this is among the most loving I've ever seen. As a game, maybe this is four stars, but as an affectionate tribute to the past, it's easily five.
