Final Fantasy Retrospective: The Seventh Generation Years

Posted on 12/28/2012 at 04:02 PM | Filed Under Feature

And I'd like to say that my excitement for the core franchise has never wavered. I quite enjoyed FF XIII and XIII-2. XIV bummed me out, but A Realm Reborn is one of my most anticipated 2013 games. I'm less enthused about Lightning Returns, but that stems more from my desire for FF XV than any actual dislike for a third XIII story.

Sorry you feel that way. With this retrospective I chose to focus on only the main 14 games. I've kicked around the idea of a look at the sequels, spin offs, and namesakes but I haven't come to a decision on it.

THQ Is Not Having A Fire Sale

The thing that's been so frustrating about this is that back in 2009 THQ was seeing amazing success. They used that success to make some amazing games to appeal to core gamers, and I can't say where they went wrong. WWE All Starts, Red Faction Guerilla, Darksiders, and Saints Row The Third are all amazing games. I even like Red Faction Armageddon, when its evaluated for what it is--a third person shooter.

I hope THQ can come out of this. I want that South Park game, as well as the next Saints game, and even the core WWE franchise seems to be taking some interesting strides that I'd like to see continue into next gen.

Episode 11: D-Generates

I think getting Skyrim for 25 bucks means you still win. Even if you add in the DLC you want you're still looking at less than the full price of the game initially. Hopefully they've stamped out most of the bugs by now, too.

Episode 1: Let Us Be Your Secret

Great first episode guys. Welcome back, and thanks for the heads up on Knights of Pen and Paper. Having a great time with it, especially since I just started tabletop gaming.

Issue 108: Mini Miiverse

The price for that bundle was excellent, even before they threw in PlayStation All Stars and the PS Plus membership. It may be a case of "too little, too late" though. PS Vita needs games, plain and simple. It needs games that are designed for the platform, and it needs them yesterday.

Of course, even then I wouldn't buy one, just like I probably won't be purchasing a 3DS. I have far too many unplayed and unopened games for my GBA, DS, and PSP to justify buying a new handheld. I'm a console gamer now, and I'm rarely in a situation where I feel like sitting at home and playing a portable game when I have more interesting games to play on my TV. Dragon Quest IX and Corpse Party are two of the best exceptions to that in recent years.

Nintendo Details Wii U Online Services

Obviously. But doing away with friend codes, having an integrated online experience that works smoothly across all games is a huge step forward for Nintendo. And the large number of new features included with the Nintendo Network at no cost puts Sony and Microsoft on warning for their new consoles as consumers will expect more from those machines out of the box than they did with the 360 and PS3.

It's nice to see Nintendo finally get their online act together, and even nicer to see them go the Sony route and allow online play without an additional fee.

I think this needs to be the model going forward. Online access and basic features for no cost, but significant added value for paid plans, ala PS Plus.

Mass Effect Trilogy For PS3 Release Date Confirmed

I'm really surprised that all the DLC for the first two games isn't included on the disc. I can understand not including the Mass Effect 3 DLC since it's still so new, but I can't help but feel a little bad for PC and Xbox 360 owners.

That being said, I'll probably end up picking up the PS3 version, because I'm an idiotic Mass Effect fanboy. And I'm curious to see how the first game plays on the PS3.

Episode 10: Halloween Havoc

I never played Out of This World. The art style bugged me even when it was new. I was a Flashback guy.

I really only remember the rock music in Doom in the first level and between levels. The majority of the game was very foreboding and creepy, and it was responsible for my first gaming related nightmare. But if you want a really scary Doom experience, play Doom 64. The soundtrack is all atmospheric and crying babies.
