Episode 139: Missing in Action

Sadly, it's harder and harder to lock down video game sales, especially since NPD stopped publishing numbers at all. You can probably track down some arcade data, but of course it would vary wildly from arcade to arcade. I just looked up Street Fighter 2 and it seems like most machines could take in about $1000 a week, which definitely adds up, especially in 1993 money.

Wait...when did you actively avoid Konami games? Because up until the tail end of last gen they were still one of the best studios in the biz. If we're talking historically, it's Capcom>Konami>Square>Nintendo for me. Nintendo is only that low because I don't revisit their games as much.

It’s a promo for an arcade game that would be seen by vendors and arcade owners. That’s why the text is so dry.

Hey, I like Chrono Cross. I can't help Patrick's feelings.

The funny thing is that my favorite Final Fantasy games are the ones with the largest casts: IV has around 16 characters and VI has 14. But something about the cast of Chrono Cross felt...rushed to me. Like, everyone could be boiled down to a gimmick, and few of them felt very developed. So I think 10-12 characters would be the sweet spot for me in another game.

Glad we were able to keep you company on your night shift, even if we probably made your ears bleed a little.

Oh, I could DEFINITELY see the first Driver making it onto that collection. It sold like gangbusters. The sequel...not so much. If not that, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the Demolition Derby games to end up on there.

Hey, don't sweat the audio in your first episode. It sounded pretty darn good to me, and you have an amazing radio voice...far better than mine. Don't worry about getting equipment and stuff yet; focus on getting your show out regularly and on time. The only podcasts I've recorded in person was Slam Masters with Friend of the Show John Gholson, but we just shared a mic and tried to keep our distance from it consistent as we recorded. So I don't have any experience with mixers or anything, but I will say that both the Blue Snowball and Blue Yeti mics have a great setting that picks up audio in a circle, which makes them great for two to four people sitting around a table. Something to think about if you want to get some gear but don't want to invest in a mixing board and expensive condenser mics.

Yeah, the leveller did some wonky stuff during processing this time. You definitely sounded low when I was editing, but not as low as you do in the final product.

If the computer played by the same rules as the player I'd be fine with most of it. I literally had enemies shooting me through fences that I had to destroy before I could fire back. And maybe I was just on the bad luck side of the RNG, but the odds were rarely in my favor. I will say that I noticed my squad was more accurate in the final battles, but the improvement had been so painfully incremental for the bulk of the game that I couldn't see a difference at all most of the time.

I'm curious what you think of the game now that you've had a chance to play it. Since I barely played the first one I can't tell if it's exactly the same, or if this one has issues that the first one didn't.

I'm glad it came out as funny as I intended. Definitely had some people tell me they were laughing while reading it.

That comment deserves a Razzie.
