Resident Evil: Revelations Priced at $39.99

The reasoning may be bunk, but at least the price point is right. I don't own a 3DS and I wouldn't buy a portable Resident Evil (even though I love RE), but for people who do, this is great news.

If Inafune approves, that's something else. Personally, I think calling back to one of the most infamously terrible pieces of box art is kind of genius, and I know that there was a version of this Mega Man in Universe. But with Inafune gone it just looks bad.

Kingdoms of Amalur Includes Day One DLC in the Box

I rage on this stuff on a case by case basis. I hated the Catwoman situation, because she had been pushed as a major part of the game, and features prominantly on the box. This Amalur thing seems okay to me. If there's going to be day one DLC, I'd like to get it for free if I buy the game. Of course, the way to keep gamers from feeling like they've been shafted is to release this DLC a few weeks after launch. And it had better not be on the disc. Gamers can tell when it is.

Oh, I intend to. I like Suda and I like Mikami, but I love Yamaoka. When I heard he was doing the music, I was sold. It just didn't scream "full price purchase" to me.

Episode 51: Gaming Communities

Posted on 01/27/2012 at 06:20 PM | Filed Under Feature

Loved the show. This was your best episode so far. Like Nick, I don't really play online. It's not so much the communities, although that's a big part of it. I typically don't spend the time to get good enough on a game to have any fun online. My games are usually single player, story-driven affairs, and when I finish one I'm on to the next. I dabbled in Modern Warfare 3, BioShock 2, and Transformers War for Cybertron after I was done with single player, but the combination of quick deaths and lame people got me to quit.

That being said, I'm against companies "policing" their gaming communities. It's a great idea in principal, but what happens is things get out of hand really fast, like Nintendo's insipid friend codes and EA's forum ban hammer causing people to be unable to play even single player games like Dragon Age II through Origin. My girlfriend does customer service for Blizzard, and so many of her calls could be answered with "It's the internet. People suck. Toughen up.". But of course she can't say that.

Now, there's one big exception to this for me, and that would be Final Fantasy XI. That is a very hardcore MMO known for its steep learning curve and punishing gameplay, but even so, the community has been by and large amazing. I have many friends that I've talked to for years that I met in FF XI. People have always been eager to help new players, and the sense of family and closeness in a strong Linkshell (guild) is incredible. Maybe it's because the game is so hard that players cling together to triumph over adversity. I couldn't say for sure, but the best time I've ever had with strangers from the internet has been there.

SoulCalibur V DLC Announced

Hell yes to Soul Blade music. I hope it's from the Khan Super Session.

This stuff feels like it may have been held back from the disc though, and that's not cool. The price is right, but I'd rather pay for new fighting styles for created characters. I hate that I can't make a convincing He-Man or Conan in SC IV because there isn't a fighting style that uses a regular one-handed sword.

So, I'm going to go ahead and say I'm not psyched about these bonus characters. Well, Cole is okay, but the others feel like they belong in a different game. I'll be buying this for the 360 because that's where the community is at, but I don't think I would have liked Master Chief or Marcus Fenix in the game, either. Sadly, the 360 just doesn't have enough interesting first party heroes.

But if this was a game as crazy as Marvel vs. Capcom, I'd be totally down for Alan Wake, who attacks with his words and coffee thermoses.

Angelo, I think this is exactly the case. I was talking about this on Twitter last night, and I feel like it's typical Japanese corporate behavior. When the Virtual Boy failed miserably Nintendo trotted Gumpei Yokoi out to the CES show floor to handle the demonstrations personally. They did this to shame him.

Now, I don't think the reason for the cancellation of Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends is totally because of Inafune leaving. Universe sounded like it wasn't coming together, and we don't know enough about Legends. It could have been garbage, for all we know. But the fact of the matter is that Inafune left, and beyond that, he was very vocal about the sorry state of the Japanese gaming industry. This is probably sour grapes on Capcom's part.
