Final Fantasy IV Review

Posted on 07/26/2021 at 01:01 PM | Filed Under Review

When I was a kid my brother would play FF6 the most because we owned it (it's my favorite in the series), but we would often rent FF4 and so I grew to love that game too. This is one of those games where I've gotten very close to the end, but haven't beaten it. I won't be satisfied without the SNES cartridge, even if it IS a little pricey to get, it's worth it.

I didn't play the OG Sonic until I was in my early 20s, but I love all of these games. For me, Mario is more about precision platforming, whereas Sonic is all about speed. Sonic is a bit too slippery for precision platforming, but it sure is fun to run super fast. Each game got better too, culminating with Sonic 3 and Knuckles being fantastic games.

Yeah, Square was on fire between 1994 and 2001. There are so many landmark titles in those years, and Square was willing to experiment with different kinds of RPGs.

I have a soft spot for many SNES JRPGs too. FF6 is my favorite RPG ever, and Chrono Trigger and Earthbound are both up there too.

Your point about the Switch is spot-on. Thanks to "everything gets ported to the Switch," I was able to play DQ XI, and I'm finally playing FF X for the first time. A ton of other PS1 era RPGs are on the Switch too, which is really awesome.

Okay, but there are still turn-based RPGs today (have you played Octopath Traveler or Dragon Quest XI?)

Yeah, it's hard to pick between SNES and PS1 eras. Both are incredible, but JRPGs did become more popular in the West during the PS1 era.

Metroid Dread is by far the game that excited me the most. It's been 19 years since we got a new 2D Metroid game! It also looks fantastic, props to Mercury Steam for doing such a great job. Also excited for WarioWare and Mario Party Superstars. The Monkey Ball Collection is also great because I've never played the second game, so I'll probably pick that up too.

RETROspective: Games About Making Games

Posted on 06/15/2021 at 01:26 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Yeah, making games is HARD. It's amazing to think about how many people it takes (hundreds) to make big AAA games today. To sit down and make a game by yourself (even with easy tools) just goes to show how much work it is (but it's fun too)
