Episode 2: VGA Trailer Trash

Posted on 12/19/2012 at 10:49 AM | Filed Under Feature

I blame your Dishonored hate on you being a Red Sox fan. You just have poor taste :D

Actually, I'm very aware that Dishonored isn't for everyone, so I'm not surprised it didn't "stick" with everybody at this website. If you aren't prepared for a slow and methodical journey, it's just not gonna work. Really, like you said, the hook is the mechanics of the game, and that's good enough for me. I get a real kick of of being a powerful, stealthy character. My favorite part of the recent Batman games is when I'm hiding in the shadows freaking people out, and you already know the first 2 Thief games are among my top games of all time. Some people just aren't into that as much as others, and that's OK with me.

Hotline Miami Review

I played this game a bit too, and while I think I had more fun with it than you did, I felt like the game was compensating for it's inconsistencies by making the action fast, furious, and graphic. "Oh, did we just screw you over buy having that guard come out a door that he's never used before? just hit "R" and try again instantly! No big deal right?"

I'll admit it was fun for a few missions, but there was a reason I turned it off after 5 and went to bed. Here's what happened: I finished my 4th or 5th mission (I can't remember, they're all pretty much the same) and got out of my car to talk to that dude that apparently works the counter at every little store in Miami. I had realized by this point that I was watching my character slowly become unhinged, and was actually pretty interested in seeing how it went. Somehow, after getting out of the car, I accidentally got right back into it and drove off. I realized in order to see what would happen, I would have to replay that mission again. I also realized that I really didn't want to.

There's a certain "try, die, try" mechanic that 8 bit games are famous for. Take Ninja Gaiden on the NES for example. Yes, that friggin stupid bird will knock you off that cliff if you don't take him out mid-jump, but he's going to be in that same place every time, so once you figure out how to deal with him, it's just a matter of remembering and executing your actions properly. I feel like Hotline Miami is trying to capture the "try-die" style of gameplay, but it's missing the consistency that makes it playable and enjoyable.

Dishonored Review

Believe the hype. This game is amazing and should NOT be missed by anybody. The only ones I can't see being entertained are gamers that limit themselves to only one genre, like shooters or sports titles. It's also worth noting that this game plays best if you take your time and don't just charge into every situation guns blazing.

Another note, this game is NOT Thief 4. Yes, it borrows quite liberally from the Looking Glass titles, but it is it's own beast. Corvo is way more violent and durable than Garret, and the superpowers change the gameplay quite a bit. Still, if you enjoyed Thief, pick this up yesterday.

I was eyeballing this on Amazon a while ago and almost pulled the trigger. Glad I waited! Hopefully this and Bravely Default make it over here!

Episode 10: Halloween Havoc

Nobody had any experiences with Out of this World? / Another World? Everything about that game was unnerving and tense. That was probably my first experience with a game stirring up those kinds of feelings. There's no real jump scares in it, but the whole world is really out to kill you, and you really felt powerless and alone. It was also the first game that was that cinematic, which really added to my immersion level.

Also, I used to play Doom with the music off. That game gets a lot more terrifying when there's not pseudo-Metallica midi metal screaming "you're a badass" in your ear the entire time. Yeah, it's all jump scares and monster closets, but those weren't even labeled things back then, and it worked for me.

The Last Story Review

I played this title, and I have to say the review is spot on. I was likewise hoping for more than The Last Story delivered, and I had the same issues you did, but it was a fun journey.  20-30 hours is a perfect length for a title like this.

I had some problems with the controls. I think they could have been mapped better, and I would have appreciated if they took advantage of the option to use the Wii remote as a pointer for stuff like shooting your crossbow.

Nice Mike, you had to mention the soundtrack. Now I have to watch that stupid Alone in the Dark movie.

Would it be out of line for me to thank you for taking one for the team Julian?

Also, is one of the girls wearing a camo hat with... cat ears?
