oops, I think there's a typo here. I said you get "limited" continues, but I meant unlimited. Yeah, the game is gracious, so hopefully you can beat the boss (some of the bosses can be tricky).
Axelay on SNES did the same thing with alternating directions. As far as I know, all the Thunder Forces games are pretty great.

Good point about the explosions. Really, the game doesn't have many negatives (except for, y'know, the game can be brutal at times)
Save states are a huge help too
Yeah, the overhead levels are just bad. And Metal Slug is certainly great, although a slower pace than Contra.
The Japanese version has a health bar? I gotta try that out!
I would suggest Super Castlevania IV, it's probably the easiest game in the series, first one I ever beat. But I'm with you, Castlevania games are tough!
