Episode 21: Revenge of the Meta-Talk

It's too late. Those six minutes of us pretty much saying goodbye, along with the rest of the podcast, were already reuploaded.

Oh no! Something seems like it went wrong with the upload.

Sorry about the technical error, folks. I hunt down the file and re-upload it tonight, which should fix part of the issue, if not all of it. Weird that it didn't transfer the last minute or two of the recording.

Update: I think a re-upload of the podcast fixed the issue with the clipped ending, there's about six more minutes or so that were missing. That said, I can't get the embedded player to work. I'm pretty sure I got the player to work when I first posted the story, but I could be thinking of PB & Jason. Any ideas about the player, Nick?

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Review

Hey anonymous. Yeah, TvC was a great game. And MvC is almost as good, but is has a few more issues than TvC does, hence the half point lower. There's different sections because it's a review for a different type of game than what I normally do. A fighting game, especially one with a wide variety of characters like this, is for many different audiences. I voiced my opinions on where I saw the game for several different audiences. It's not a perfect format, but I believe it gets the job done pretty well.

I hate to say it, but from reading what you say, you admit that it's a few modes lighter and the unlockable extras just don't seem like enough. That's what I spend some time in the review talking about. Beyond that, I feel there's some hiccups due to the X-Factor and a few other gameplay mechanics. When you look at the content and my overall conclusion, it doesn't sound like our point of view differs as much as you might think.

Regardless, if you don't enjoy my review opinion and you have constructive criticism, I'd be glad to hear it out. As it stands, though, it doesn't look like you have much, except for the idea that you don't like headings on various sections in reviews. What is it about them you don't like? I added them in because I felt they would point readers to relevant sections that they might care about, but I'd like to know what seems so off-putting to you.

It's a step up from MvC2, yes, but also a step over. Since you liked Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, I'm sure you'd like this game, but truth be told, it actually feels like a step back from TvC in some regards.

Truth be told, the game was borderline a 4-star title, rather than a 3.5 star. Why? The character endings were once again nonsensical, like with other fighting crossovers, but this time, nearly every one is unsatisfying. Beyond that, the menus are a bit of a mess, both in online and offline modes. The core gameplay and attention to detail with the characters brings the game up to four stars, but if there were slightly less in-game polish, the game would have scored lower.

Additionally, given the lack of a full, cohesive story despite four great opening movies, the reduced roster size, and a handful of missing online features, I can't help but shake the feeling we'll see a better "Super Marvel vs. Capcom 3" at some point in time.

Mario Kart Red and Mario Kart Green?

That sure wasn't a typo, though. Otherwise, as sent, the line would read something like "...and a new installments" or "and new installment." Whomever drafted or edited the press release was under the specific impression that more than one Mario Kart "installment" was going to make it on the 3DS.

I'm very surprised I haven't seen anyone else who picked up on the wording in the press release, but personally, I'm not so sure I buy it was an error, though I can't figure out what Nintendo has to gain by releasing a press release and then denying the truth of the release's contents, either.

3DS Launch Titles Announced

"Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works for 2011 from Nintendo include The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Kid Icarus™: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart™ series. "

Installments. As in more than one installment. Why would Nintendo prepare more than one Mario Kart game on the 3DS platform in a single calendar year?

A Question of Morality: Console Hacking

Posted on 02/21/2011 at 10:30 PM | Filed Under Feature

I have to say, I agree with Nick on a lot of these issues. I've mentioned it quite a bit in my podcast that if you buy something, you own it. It stands to reason that I believe the software that the PS3 uses to run its interface and operations is yours to modify how you see fit, as well.

Saying all this, PSN isn't a right for owners of Playstation 3's. If Sony wants to remove the ability to access PSN from players with custom firmware, they absolutely are allowed to do so. I believe that thought process is an erroneous one, given an individual with a hacked PS3 might simply be using it to make his PS3 run h264 encoded videos he ripped from his DVDs. Still, a ban from PSN prevents hackers from legitimately purchasing DLC and downloadable games, which could directly influence a console hacker to pirate the now unavailable titles. While it's a fair move by Sony, I personally think it was a bad choice.

I have to disagree, though, about the "Try it before you buy it" idea of piracy. At this point, there's a large number of free demos up on PSN and Xbox Live. It's true this isn't the case with the Wii, but this "Try before you buy" mentality behind piracy doesn't support the developers who more progressively allow you to demo their games and software of their own volition, and could potentially limit the availability of demos in the future.

That said, I absolutely love the ability to modify saved data and use codes inside a game. It definitely allows me to get the most out of each purchase, and I don't see the harm.

For now, the plan is to record PixlTalk on Thursdays and bring it to you on Fridays. As we mention both Stanton Daries and and Andrew Clark are interested in joining the PixlTalk crew, but both were unavailable this past week.
