Weekday O.G. Xbox Project

Posted on 03/03/2021 at 09:49 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Xbox was interesting. I was primarily on Sony consoles , but I eventually bought one because Splinter Cell and Ninja Garden looked too good. I was obsessed with SC after the initial E3 trailer. Looked like a dream game, being a stealth and big tactical shooter fan and Tom Clancy game then.

Enjoyed the hell out of Halo. I was skeptical of the straight 10 scores in EGM, but it definitely turned out to be a game to remember. Beat it twice at a friend's house before I owned a Box, then borrowed it and beat it again myself.

Will be interesting to see what other games you talk about. Look forward to that trip down memory lane.

I didn't and still don't like how they designed Link, but the style, design, and animation of enemies and particle effects were and still are a joy to look at. Btw, BoTW had a similar art direction, and I think the character designs , although following generic anime stylings, are a decent compromise between WW and TP.

Sid Meier's Pirates is still the king of pirate games I've played, as that was a simulation and the pirate theme in WW was hardly developed, mechanically. The sailing and sea exploration was some of the most memorable content in the entire series for me though. I spent more time on that than the main quest.

Combat is maybe the best in the series. Felt smooth as silk.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Nihon Falcom

Posted on 02/26/2021 at 08:29 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Always liked Falcom. Their games are what I'd call "cozy." Ys on the SMS might have been the first video RPG I played. In those days I had the habit of playing from other people's saves on rental games, so naturally I couldn't make heads or tails of it. But there was something compelling about it. The superb music helped, I never forgot the tracks since those three days I had possession of it.  Same with Legacy of the Wizard.

Falcom also had a knack for creating charming, magical, and grand worlds of fantasia with limited means. They are nostalgia generators.

For some reason I never knew about the LoH games until a few years ago. I should check them out to see if they also have the qualities I mentioned above.

I think Bomber Raid on the SMS was a clone of these games. Hey, we took what we could get in that platform.

How much time did you spend on each game?

My Media Scrapbook: 2020

I honestly can't remember the media I engaged this year. Nothing much that is current.

Tenet was the only 2020 movie I saw.

I played some older games, which I posted about.

All the music is definitely older, I don't keep up on that stuff.

Watched Primal, which I think started this year, and Better Call Saul which I believe had a season this year.

I NEVER read anything that is younger than 5 years old, I just don't keep track of the market like that.

Yeah, probably. DQ and FF are still the guide stones for much  of RPG design in Japan. They never had much of a pen and paper RPG scene, like in the west, to draw from.

You'd want to switch for variety and/or to gain certain permanent abilities from other classes.  And it's kind of like a respec option. Don't like the class of a character? Change it into something else, while still having the option to go back. I usually know what class composition I want my party to have ahead of time, so I just switch to whatever jobs are a prerequisite for that as they come, until I get to the class I wanted and stick with it.

Although you can ask what is the point, why not just have a wider class selection from the start? I think it comes from Wizardry, where if you started with or gained the right stats, other class options would be open to a character. It's not something that comes from DnD or any other tabletop RPGs I'm aware of. Maybe 1st edition DnD, which I never played, but it's strange and needlessly convoluted just the same.
