Let's talk musicianship: prog and classic rock

Posted on 06/26/2012 at 12:58 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Everybody says good things about Tool but I never got into the band. In highschool all the Toon fans were fucking elitist jerks who thought anybody who didn't listen to anything but Tool was a loser lol, so I flipped them off and never wanted to get involved with that crowd at school. That's how it was with Led Zeppelin too, Zep fans were dicks back in school. All the little kiddies would go to Kohls, have their moms buy them a Zeppelin t-shit, and they'd walk around acting like pretentious hipster snobs who have been loving the band since they came out of the womb and know all the trivia. Back in school the cool thing to do was to be a Beatles fan, Pink Floyd, Tool, Greatful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, anything that made you feel retro and special. So I went off and found my own music. That's how I ended up with all these bands I've been listing from metal, to punk, prog, and beyond.

I don't listen to much of the new Offspring stuff anyways. My sister does so I always burn the cds when she comes over. I have Offspring, Ixnay, Conspiracy of One, Smash, Americana, and Ignition. My cousin Adrian and I bought all the album and obsessed over the Offspring as teens.

I have a hard time understanding classifications to music, so I end up saying whatever comes to mind lol. As this series went on I had a hard time trying to figure out what to call everything. In my punk rock blog I labeled things as either "traditional punk" or "bridging the gap between punk and metal" and those two labels don't make any sense, so you can see where I'm coming from.

Yea I'm a big fan of 70s rock, some of the late 60's, some of the 80s too I think. I'm not sharp on dates, I'd have to have help in organizing that kind of stuff and figuring out when all the music came out. Also, yes I do like hard rock like AC/DC and Van Halen. I can play AC/DC's Thunderstruck on guitar, it's the first AC/DC song I learned.

By the way epic Neil Young blog, I can tell you worked pretty hard on it and I'm going to go give it a read. I noticed you posted it around the same time I posted this one.

@Mike and Angelo

Okay enough about Dishonored lol, just kidding. I only saw a few seconds of it from E3 and I thought it looked pretty great, but it went under my radar while I was thinking about Halo 4. I'm going to go watch some gameplay videos if I can find them so I can get caught up to speed on what the game is about. If I fall in love with it, I will tell you both on twitter.

By the way thanks for the info about I Am Alive, Mike. I was hoping that they would design more stealth and options into it. It sucks they missed that potential. I'll have to take it off my radar. It'll be fine though, there's lots of other better games to try out on XBLA. The next time I have some Mircosoft points I'm going to buy Beyond Good & Evil HD as well as FEZ maybe. After that I might try out Torchlight and a few other things.

Sorry friend, you can't post on this thread unless you're talking about boobies! Just kidding, Julian and I kind of derailed Esteban's thread lol. I third the notion that Felicia Day has boobs. They are there.

I played this demo last night and I really liked what I played. The puzzle combat and timed platforming were really fun. I didn have some problems though, the demo was super scripted. Is that how the full game is. What I mean is that I thought the level design and encounters would offer more options, but they didn't. When I was walking around I was getting funneled into each new encounter. I also thought there would be stealth but there wasn't any. They even have a crouch button you can push that lets you sneak around Splinter Cell style (and I love SC) but I don't think there's a stealth system built in at all.

I would crouch and sneak around but I still got funneled into each encounter, everybody always sees you anyways, and the sneaking nevered mattered in the demo. Is that reflective of the design in the full game?

The Offspring can definitely show that bratty attitude when they want to. I love the influences Mike Ness from Social Distortion has, and it makes his music better. Bad Religion is great, they've always made a habit of doing songs that fairly often make use of simple backing vocals and harmonies. Among all the punk bands, Bad Religion is by far the most intelligent. The guys in The Offspring are friends with the Bad Religion guys and the people in Offspring have an inside-joke where they compete with each other from time to time to see "who can write the best Bad Religion song". They all have to open dictionaries and start looking for bigger words to put in the lyrics lol.

Joan Jett is incredible, her story is great, and the music she's made over the years is really great. I don't even want to think about Britney Spear's covers of Joan Jett or Rolling Stones lol. Chuck is a good Sum 41 album, it's their heaviest by far and it has a number of other great songs on it. They have a lot of other great albums too, but they all sound a bit different than the next. Some are more dark, some are very bright, some are cleaner and more pop-punk, some are heavier and darker.

If you're interested in hearing the sound of this Social Distortion song, I'm going to leave it here for you. It's a honky-tonk version of their classic song Ball & Chain and I think it's brilliant.

THQ Announces Next Saints Row-Continues to Restructure

That's crazy, Darksiders 2 is one of their biggest games and I was hoping that game would be a slam dunk. If they don't even have enough cash at the moment to ship one of their top priorities like Darksiders 2, any Warhammer game is certainly going to get cast aside.

More Saint's Row is great and everything, but what happened to their Warhammer 40k game? That's what I was really excited about. I want more Warhammer 40k shooters. They were repurposing an MMO I think, into a shooter, but with all this restructuring and reprioritizing I don't know if it still exists.
