Retro Game of the Week: X-Men

Posted on 08/26/2015 at 12:16 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I agree with this statement in full.  Its a great X-men 2D game.  The inclusion of Psylocke also makes it pretty unique up until Capcom allowed us to use that character in their fighting games.

I have owned the cart since it came out and played too may times to count.  It suffers none of problems that the Genesis game did with the one gripe that powers for each character are limited except for Psylocke.

The Mega Man X games did have a bundle released on PS2 and Gamecube.  THe GC version costs more and I think is considered the better release between them.  The Music and controls are off with the PS2 version.  It might be cheaper to pick them up on the Wiiu virutal console than trying to score a copy of the game with case and manual.

There is also a Megaman collection coming out for PC, PS4, XB1, and 3ds with the first 6 games.

You can get most of the Playstation 1 versions of Mega Man on the Playstation network on a PS3 as well.  Im sure I missed some thing.

There are also the Zero games.  I have heard are good and explain his origins more too.

Guys and Gals! Let's make a list of visual novel games!

Captain N ponders on: Metroid Fusion

Posted on 08/07/2015 at 11:08 AM | Filed Under Blogs

The game does a good job of moving Samus' story further along.  It also does a (very briefly) introduce us to somoene from her past that isnt an alien in Adam.  But perhaps Fusion gave the Metroid series a dead-end because now all of the Metroids are wiped out and she retains the last bits of them in her cells.  Is this why all subsequent Metroid games have taken place before Fusion?

The game itself I thought was good and found different ways of making you feel fearful of the S-AX.  You could not fight it until you were ready, and it was hunting you.  Very Alien/Aiens like and gives you another sense of how Metroid's roots began.  Yes, its linear, but this game wraps a narrative around that.  Once again making us reacquire her abilites and regain Godmode-Sue.   The controls are tight and a natural evolution of the controls from Super Metroid being more refined.  For the Gameboy Advanced the sprite art is really good.  It does not upscale prefectly on the GC GBA adapter but I like it none the less.

Good release for the Wiiu Virtual console.  Should be on the 3DS.  Nintendo would do well if contiuned this story making Samus the hunted perhaps and explore her Mythos and how its linked to the Chozo and their prophecies.  I would even take a remaster of Metroid 2 similar to how AM2RM is doing it.

Grandia II HD coming to GOG and Steam this year

Grandia 2 came out for the PS2 and was regarded as a broken port..  Also it has been released on the Japanese PSN in September of 2014 so there is a chance its coming to the US.  Just be careful what you ask for in that port.  Skies of Arcadia though....if ever there was a game that needed a sequel especially with JRPG's coming back to mainstream demand.

Mega Man Review

This first one is good and unforgivingly difficult at times.  While I think the Robot Masters can be hard at first, Dr. Wily's castle is the real challenge.  The Rock Monster is probably the hardest boss in the game.  I always had to cheat using my NES Advantage "slow" button to down him.  Picked this up on the VG for my WiiU.  A must have.  Megaman 2 while better wouldnt have happened without this one.
