Out of this World Review Rewind

The Great Escape

Out of this World (aka Another World) was initially developed and released for the Amiga and Atari ST personal computers by French game designer Eric Chahi in 1991. The game was later ported to the Super Nintendo, among other home consoles. Out of this World garnered much praise for its intriguing visual style and storytelling ability. In most games from this era, text or dialogue was usually the vehicle used to drive the story forward. But this one did it differently. Instead, the ever-changing situations, dangers, and victories all worked together to tell the story without a word.

Descent Review

Descent into awesome.

Even if you only played the demo way back in the ancient days of the mid-'90s, it's hard to forget the thrill of flying in and out of cramped hallways, dodging lasers and missiles to steal a door key and then strafing downward (or is it upward?) back out of the room to safety. Descent celebrates its 19th birthday this month with a straight, bare-bones port on Steam—all 27 stomach-wrenching levels of the original. This particular version has some mouse issues, but a great game is a great game.

Digital Mystery Tour Episode 4: Car Combat!

The stage is set, the green flag drops!

Ok, I didn't exactly follow the typical SIA format, but if you're gonna kick off a podcast with Bad to the Bone, you better be the kind of guy that writes his own rules. This weeks feature? Music to blow up your fellow racers by, because any competition is so much better when things can explode.

MIA - The Lost Vikings

Wait...Blizzard made games besides WoW, Diablo, and StarCraft?

When talking about Blizzard Entertainment, it’s almost impossible to imagine the company before the creation of their core pillars of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. It’s even more difficult to think of the company making games for home consoles, but in the early 90s both of these unimaginable things were true. Under the original company name of Silicon & Synapse, the house that would be Blizzard produced The Lost Vikings—a beloved side-scrolling puzzle game that fell by the wayside for juggernauts like Warcraft.  We have some love for those quirky Vikings around here, so it was high time for them to get their very own MIA.

Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors Review

A brand new first person dungeon crawler – I know, I was surprised too.

Going into Stonekeep, I was fully aware it was a budget priced WiiWare release, but still, I was excited. It’s not very often you see a company willing to revive an extremely old and niche series, much less one that’s a first person RPG dungeon crawler. While a big deal back on the PC two decades ago, these days you just don’t see many of these types of RPGs. But alas, Stonekeep quickly and effectively dashed my excitement after just a few short minutes.

Bethesda Wins Lawsuit Over Fallout

Interplay no longer has a license to develop a Fallout MMO.

In what is surely the first huge story of 2012, it was announced today that Bethesda Softworks has won the rights to the entire Fallout franchise, lock, stock, and barrel. The lawsuit, filed back in 2009 against original Fallout developer Interplay, had to do with a proposed MMO set in the popular wasteland series. This comes after a loss against Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, over the use of the word “scrolls” for the indie company’s next game.

Tour de 64: ClayFighter 63 1/3 and ClayFighter: The Sculptor's Cut

The missing 2/3 of the game must have been quality control.

These are two versions of the last game released in the ClayFighter series, which spawned as a spoof of the fighting games which were all the rage in the early-to-mid 90's. As I'm no fan of fighters, I don't really know how this series compares with traditional fighting games, but I always appreciate the seldom appearance of a videogame parody. Unfortunately, this one seems to be all style and no substance, and even the theme can wear thin.
