Ridge Racer 3D Preview

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER IN THREEEE DEEEE!

As you may have already seen, we've received our review copy of Ridge Racer 3D, but unfortunately, we won't be able to attack it until after the 3DS launches later this week. In the meantime, hopefully you'll settle for a few details on the game.

With most of these early 3DS games, Ridge Racer 3D boasts stereoscopic 3D graphics, showcasing the vehicles and tracks featured in the game. While there is no confirmation of this, the 3D effect should help players in judging the distance between their vehicle and other vehicles on the tracks, as well as the distance to impediments and turns that lie in the distance.

The game will also incorporate other graphical effects to take use of the 3D capabilities of the 3DS. Tracks with rough terrain will kick up dirt and when nitrous is applied for a boost, flames will burst from the tail pipes of your car. The series will be making strides into new territory as well, featuring tracks with canyons and snowy mountains. Favorite courses from past titles will also make an appearance in the game.

On the gameplay front, players will have access to a new drift button. This should make it easier to navigate through tight turns without losing speed. Although the game is integrating this new functionality, players should expect a gameplay experience not unlike Ridge Racer titles in the past.

Traditionally, the series has held its arcade roots, featuring unrealistic physics and fast-paced racing. Ridge Racer 3D appears to be no exception. As such, players looking for a wholly original Ridge Racer experience are going to come up empty handed.

Up to four players will be able to go head-to-head in the game's Local Play mode. By using a Mii, tag, or photo, players will be able to identify themselves in the races. Online play is absent from the offering, requiring players to wrangle up a group of local friends to enjoy the game for multiplayer.

StreetPass functionality has also been incorporated, allowing players to quickly and easily swap Ghost Data. StreetPass will also allow players to create a "My Ranking" profile for swapping time records with friends.

Ridge Racer 3D will be available on March 27 alongside the launch of the 3DS for a suggested retail price of $39.99. Be sure to check back then for our review on the game!
