There's a long history of mediocre Batman games out there. Nothing beats Batman Forever, though. In that, or at least in the Game Gear version, I could never, absolutely never figure out how to get out of the first area. Eventually, it became on of the few games I've ever sold.
Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker
The joke was on me!
This is a fighting game based on the Batman Beyond spin-off, which I had never heard of before. As Batman, you punch and kick your way through mostly side-scrolling levels and must stop the Joker from carrying out some nefarious scheme. There are four different suits to choose from which each have strengths and weaknesses, such as the offensive suit which has good attacks but a weak block. There are cutscenes in between levels which tell the story, which consist of stills and text.
Since I'm not a fan of fighting games and therefore aren't very skilled at them, I chose Normal over Hard. I chose the standard suit since it is balanced, though I soon found the offensive suit in an explosive cardboard box, which could then be switched to at any time. The other suits are probably around somewhere as well. In the next room, I punched the generic thugs and took the key to get into the following room. After a few more thug rooms, I step into a room where an I-beam drops from the ceiling directly onto Batman and takes down half his energy. Up to that point the thug punches just did 2 damage (out of 100). Another I-beam swings toward Batman as I move upward, where a crane drops on Batman's head doing an insane amount of damage that caused the first life loss.
After studying the room, I realized I could just walk along the bottom to reach the controller, who put up no fight as I repeatedly mashed B to punch. After defeating him, I jumped down a hole in the floor to continue to the next area. There were two doors to go in here so I just picked one at random. Once reaching the end of the hall, there was another hole in the ground not unlike the last one, so I jumped into it. There went life number two. Best stage design ever.
If you're into Batman beyond then you might get some enjoyment out of the game, but otherwise there isn't much here that's worth seeing. There isn't a 2-player mode to add replayability, which all beat-em-ups should have.
