A Letter From the Director

Only with your help can we make PixlBit great.

I am humbled. It’s impossible to feel any other way at this particular moment in time. Well, maybe just a wee bit overwhelmed. I feel that too. After three and a half years of running the site, we’ve never seen a response quite like this. I too mourn the loss of 1up, but I couldn’t possibly feel more proud and honored to have all of you refugees claim this site as your new home on the Internet.

When my wife Chessa and I started this site in September of 2009, we had a vision of what PixlBit was going to be all about. It was going to be about journalistic integrity – avoiding clickbait, writing justifiable reviews, and standing by each and every piece of writing posted to the site. In my opinion, we fulfilled this part of our vision wholeheartedly, thanks in large part to our passionate volunteer-driven staff. However, the other portion of our vision is only now coming to fruition.

PixlBit was going to be about community. Unfortunately, the Internet is a big place, and despite starting with a small portion of fans from our last site, PixlBit remained mostly in obscurity. Here and there we managed to hit the radar, but despite our best efforts, only a small portion of visitors stuck around as dedicated fans. Many of these readers now line the halls of our staff.

However, here we are today, and absolutely everything is different. PixlBit is alive in a way that only existed in our dreams. I click a link, read a blog, bounce back to the home page and three more have popped up, with a swath of new comments accompanying them. It’s incredible… simply incredible.

When I say the presence of all of you humbles me, I mean this from the absolute bottom of my heart. This is the PixlBit I dreamed of and to see that dream begin to come to life is fantastic beyond words.

So I say this to all of you, both old fans and new arrivals, PixlBit is yours to mold. I’ve achieved my dream of what it could be and only with your feedback and input can it grow beyond expectations. As far as I’m concerned, the sky’s the limit.

If a feature will make the experience more usable, I’ll add it. If a new idea will make it more fun and interesting to interact, I’m there. Whatever it may be that you think will improve your experience, please, let us know.

Of course, I know you’re already feeding me some great suggestions, and they’ve been heard. The follow feature was the first one added (and subsequently improved). I’ll also be working on a cleaner edit function for comments, as well as a delete function for both comments and blogs. Images and videos will be something you can add to comments soon too.

Somewhere on the horizon I’ll be adding private messaging, which will include alerts when those you’re following post a blog. It’ll also alert you to when people comment on your blogs. But these features are going to have to wait just a little bit.

See, Chessa and I just recently (January 10) had our second son and that’s been a strong motivator to make a move back to where our families live in New York. On Friday, March 1 all of our stuff is being picked up and on Saturday we’ll be boarding a plane and officially heading back. As you can imagine, things are a little hectic around our household, so bear with me as I settle my life and incrementally make the improvements you all would love to see.

Needless to say, I am invigorated and the staff is as well. We’ve been here serving you before you came and we can’t wait to continue to provide great content for a warm community that we’re deeply involved in.

Thank you all of you for coming, I can’t wait to meet you all.

Ha! You know, I never though of us as a Mom and Pop shop, but I guess we literally are one! Glad we're giving off that cozy/comfy vibe, that makes me super happy. A safe haven for mature gamers and gaming discussion is something I always wanted, so to hear that so many are getting that from our site is heartwarming.

Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks Joaquim. I mentioned it on the chat one day, but tried not to make a big deal about it. It's causing all sorts of havoc at home for me and the past couple weeks have been unbelievably stressful, but we're managing to get through it all. One more week of pain and I hope life settles back into a comfortable groove.

What this means is that we're counting on you guys to let us know how to improve the site.  Start leaving comments here indicating what new site features you would like to see, what improvements we can make to existing features, etc...

We're kind of in "blank slate" mode over here, so let your imaginations run wild.

Thanks for having us!  Just a quick question from me, is there a way to add more than 3 games to our collection at a time?  Not a huge priority if there isn't since I only need to add all my games once, but just want to be sure I'm not doing things the hard way if I don't have to.  Thank you for your time, and thank you for helping us transition to our new home!

As a refuge from 1up just wanted to say that this site is very user freindly and i might add better then 1 up was all my freinds has migrated here and I now see why, this is an awsome site you created and we as bloggers and game fans will help this site to expand and better in everyway we can, for all of us are very dedicated to gaming and love the fact that pixlbit can be our new home, thank you for excepting us with the utmost freindly welcome. :-)

Thanks so much for coming! I couldn't be happier to have all of you here. Never in a million years did I see 1up closing and you can add a million onto that number onto my expectation that users would migrate this way. Michael117 has been a great friend of the site and I know he really rallied the troops to come here. Among the staff he's our hero this weekend :).

Nick, thank you for all of this. Take your time, enjoy your new family member, settle in. We can wait. Just having a place for us to settle into that already feels like home will be enough until you're ready.

Thanks Rangergirl! Before all this craziness of moving set in, I thankfully got a couple weeks off from work to spend with my wife and two boys. It was a much needed break after many months of long hours and juggling lots of ongoing projects.

One more week and my mind will be at ease and we'll be up in our new house. It'll definitely take some time to settle in, but I'll do my best to get back into the swing of things and help improve this place further.

I just want to say thanks NIck, Jesse, and to everybody else who works here. 1up was a big part of my life for a while and I"m sad to see it go. I'm so happy that most of my best friends from there have found refuge here. That's what matters. It wasn't the site that I loved so much but being a part of the community. I hope to be an active member on pixlbit as well.

Thanks guys! I have a feeling that this weekend has been the start of great things to come. Can't wait to dive into the many blogs that have already been posted and into the ones that are still yet to come.

There have been so many community features we've dreamt of, but never had the properly sized community to implement. Now with all of you here, we can hopefully grow together and make this a tight knit community that works together to do some really awesome stuff!

Hey Nick (and Jesse),

Happy to be here. I will do my best to be an active member of the PixlBit community just as I was at 1UP. A lot of 1UPs most active bloggers are now here so count on us to be very vocal. :D

Jesse Miller Staff Writer

Its been a great place to come Nick. Your site is about what everyone at 1up wanted, and that was really a community of people who enjoy not only video games and articles, but each other! It appears here that there is a mature group of readers, bloggers and staff that are small enough yet large enough to make us a community of friends!

You all have been so very accomodating, and really sort of existing off in obsurity (well we are geeks so c'mon we've all been there :p) it what we are kinda looking for. A place just for us, the fact is that you are ONE OF US (sry clerks cartoon ref :p) IGN, Ziff-Davis and so many others are not run by someone like us, they don't get us and subsequently grow tired of us then kick us to the curb (i.e 1up's, gamespy's closing). We really do appreciate the new home!

Nick DiMola Director

02/24/2013 at 03:36 PM

Couldn't be happier to hear that and have you guys here. I love that we have a group of excited gamers here and that I can add all sorts of features to the site to make you guys happy.

I'm a programmer by trade and PixlBit has always been my passion project. It'll be fun to take on some new challenges for people who are truly excited about the outcome.

Thank you so much for not only being so welcoming, but attempting to make this as smooth a transition as possible. It feels good to have a voice in the development of such a great site. With that being said, take your time! Best of luck with the move and congrats on the new baby!

Nick DiMola Director

Thank you so much! Nothing quite like bringing a baby home. My older son is 2, so it's been a while since we've been in the up-all-night-constant-feeding-and-attention mode, but we're settling back into it. Doesn't help having a big move coming up, but with family back in NY, it should make both my life and Chessa's life a little easier.

In any event, welcome and thanks for coming! We couldn't be happier you've decided to call PixlBit your new home!

02/24/2013 at 02:18 PM

Thanks for extending the invitation to us. We recieved no such special treatment from IGN. I created an account over there a few days ago, but I think their site is just aweful. Considering how much presence they have in the gaming community, their blog, a community of real people, is tucked away in the dark recesses of their site away from their glorious ads, as if ashamed. Honestly, IGN looks like giant billboard!

What I appreciated about 1up, is that they featured their community of bloggers on the front pages as equals to their writers. I can't think of any othe site that does this, except maybe here.

The follow feature was a tremendous addition. I found and followed everyone painlessly and easily. I appreciate that.

Nick DiMola Director

02/24/2013 at 03:44 PM

Glad you're enjoying the follow feature! With those bigger sites, they get so much traffic already that they just don't know or care when a group shows up. Like I mentioned before, I never would've expected a mass migration from 1up to PixlBit, but I'm flattered that you all chose us. It's probably the greatest compliment I can imagine. Pair that with all of your amazing comments and I'm absolutely humbled. This is more than I could've ever hoped for :)

I'm glad I've been able to call PixlBit my new "Vacation" home. One thing I do think the site needs though: The ability to delete or edit posts.

Nick DiMola Director

02/24/2013 at 06:11 PM

Double-clicking a post will allow you to edit it. I'm planning to add a more obvious link to enable to feature. As for deleting, I'm working on that now and should have it available soon.

Thanks for coming - glad to have you here!

Our Take

Jesse Miller Staff Writer

A delete function is forthcoming, but the edit is already there.  You can see that on the right hand menu of the actual blog.  To edit comments, double click your comment, and you'll be brought into "edit mode".

Let me know if you need anything else, and keep an eye out for that delete feature!

Appreciate the warm welcome Nick! It's awesome to see a community grow like this, with so many people who want to make a gaming site as thriving as it can be, simply because they love the medium so much.

It's very awesome to see that the person who runs the site is so passionate and excited about the community growth as well; as humbled as you are, we are equally grateful to have found another REAL gaming website/community to help build and be a part of.

Looking forward to days ahead, providing content, and seeing how things around here evolve and grow. Boom!

I wasn't an active blogger on 1up but I loved that site.  I've spent countless hours listening to their podcasts and I have a special place in my heart for the 1upShow (especially the theme songs) and I was really saddened to see them shut down.  I doubt that one more active blogger would have helped them keep running but, I do feel like I let them down because I didn't contribute to what they were doing and trying to do.

If I could change that I would but I can't so what I'd like to do is become an active member of this site and help this community grow and prosper, and I'm really going to work hard to put forth some interesting content.  Things that I had always wanted to do at 1up but never got around to.  I'm going to try and get some stuff up over the next couple of days, but it's been a bit hectic around my house lately as my wife and I just moved into our new apartment and there is still a ton of unpacking to do, but I'll make sure to pop in and read what the staff and community is putting up and leave some comments until I can knock out a post or two of my own.

Thanks for providing me with a new home.

Hey Nick, as a 1up straggler, I just wanted to find somehwere other than halochief_90's comments section to tell you what an absolutely incredible job you're doing! I asked for videos in comments yesterday, expecting it to take a while, here I am today staring at a video button!

And you've added all these features in the past couple days when you just had a kid? You are one motivated man! Don't worry, I'll feed suggestions as they come to my mind, cause this place is amazing, cause you're amazing, and I want to help you help it improve!

Nick,

You can thank RangerGirl for bringing me here. She said this place was pretty chill, so I figured I would take her word for it and try it out. But thanks for the warm welcoming! It's kind of nice to see the director of the site taking interest in the new members as opposed to seeing the current community moaning and groaning about the recent wave of newcomers seeking a home.

So far no complaints from me. It's your site, you manage it how you see fit. If you ever need any suggestions though, just let me know and I promise to be as honest as possible! And again, thanks for the warm welcome!

I actually feel guilty I wasn't posting more at pixlbit before 1up sunk,Nick. It's truly a great place and honestly I would have made more guest posts if time hadn't slipped through the hourglass so easily.

But your swelling ranks should tell you something! "Attitude and heart" can make a huge difference when creating a game website. It's not merely about being "big" and up to date on all the latest breaking news in the medium.

If I wanted more current reviews and more main steam media I'd be at IGN or Gamespot. Then again, isn't that approach a dime a dozen? Those sites maybe good at what they do but they are lacking in a certain genuine pizzazz only "genuine gamers" can emanate! (At least in my opinion)

Nick DiMola Director

Hey man, no worries about not spending a ton of time here in the past. I completely understand what it's like to be entrenched in a particular community and have limited bandwidth to spend time elsewhere.

Like you said, the influx of people here says a lot and for that I'm quite thankful. It means a tremendous amount to me. Seriously, it's more than anyone can even begin understand.

PixlBit has always been something special to me. A manifestation of a great accomplishment in my life. To now be able to share that with a bigger audience is incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. I've been on cloud 9 since you've all arrived.

Suggestion

I don't know if anyone has brought it up, but is there a way we can see which blogs we have commented on from our profile page, or anywhere else for that matter.  That way we can easily find and respond.  Not a big deal.

Nick DiMola Director

02/27/2013 at 01:06 AM

There is no way to do it right now, but it has definitely been brought up and will undoubtedly be addressed soon. Might be something I work on tomorrow. Either that or a private messaging system. Being able to track what comments you leave would be immensely helpful - I've had a hard time keeping up with my own comments at this point.
