My only interest is in XV and the X remake.
E3 2013: The Future of Final Fantasy
There's a lot of Final Fantasy on the way, but is it the Final Fantasy people want?
FINAL FANTASY XV
That’s right, folks, Final Fantasy XV has been announced at last! It’s been a long time coming, but finally the fifteenth entry in the fabled Final Fantasy series has…
…oh, wait. It’s just Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Pardon my lack of enthusiasm, but I was never all that excited for this game when it was announced seven years ago. This stems from a lot of reasons, but in a nutshell I’m not very interested in a hyper realistic Final Fantasy game that plays like Kingdom Hearts. I’m also dead tired of Tetsuya Nomura’s character designs, and the newly-christened Final Fantasy XV is a prime example of Nomura running wild.
But a lot of you love Kingdom Hearts and adore Nomura’s designs, so you’re probably in for a treat! Final Fantasy XV has been moved to the PS4 and Xbox One, which is probably why it fell off the map for, what, three years? The game looks fantastic from a graphical point of view, and the environments—depicting a modern-looking city—can’t seem to contain the might of mythic FF monster staples like behemoths and iron giants. These massive beasts wreak havoc, overturning cars and toppling walls as our hero Noctis battles them back in real time.
Even though this game has been around E3 seven times now, there is still very little that’s known about the actual gameplay. Noctis appears to be able to wield a plethora of blades, which also surround him in an ethereal kind of shield. Close inspection of the HUD shows a weapon select in the lower left of the screen, so perhaps different weapons are needed for different enemies. With Final Fantasy XV going into the realm of full-on action, Noctis has the ability to jump with the best of them, and even has no problem fighting enemies on the sides of a skyscraper. Sure, why not?
I’m not excited for this game, but a lot of people are. I have my doubts that it will make its 2014 release, but maybe making this game a core, numbered entry in the Final Fantasy series will light a fire under the butts of Nomura and his team.
