PixlBit's Final Impressions of E3

Read how the staff reacted to this year's big show.

Jon "JD" Lewis - Staff Writer

E3 2013 for me had one of the best showings in a while. With two brand new consoles on the horizon, there was a lot for me to be excited about. While there were some disappointments, overall I came away thrilled about what’s to come. For me, Sony made the biggest impression by convincing me to want to buy a PlayStation 4. While their list of exclusives is pretty slim, the relief that it wasn’t going to have the restrictions that the Xbox One announced was very welcoming. Not to mention, the $399 price point is too good to be true.

While Microsoft came out looking very weak after Sony’s announcements, I still was pretty impressed with some of the things they showed off. I’m super excited for Killer Instinct, and Titanfall looks like a competitive first person shooter that I totally wouldn’t mind getting into.

On another note, Nintendo played it really safe this year. I was disappointed that they didn’t have a new Metroid, Star Fox, or even a new IP to show off this year, but the games I saw all looked great. Between Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong, and of course Super Smash Bros, there’s a lot to look forward to on their end. Not to mention, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Pokemon X/Y will surely keep my 3DS where it belongs – in my backpack at all times for immediate use.

It will be interesting to see where the industry goes. I agree with Mike Wall, the AAA model is not sustainable and the knee-jerk reaction companies have taken to restrict consumer rights to squeeze pennies that will ultimately not fill the void is the elephant in the room. Which way are we going? Can more and varied games save the day? Will there be a competitive market to purchase them in? That's what I'm looking at this generation.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Review

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an entry in the Metroid Prime series - 18 years, in fact. It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
