It's all about the funny books.
Well, we're a bit late thanks to technical difficulties and busy schedules, but the Nerds Without Pants are back with another special format. Once again there is no time for the media we've been consuming, as we are joined by fan favorite John Gholson to talk all things comic books.
We begin by talking about the actual printed editions themselves. Everyone has their tale to tell about how they caught the comic book bug, with the exception of Angelo who explains how comics were just never his bag. We talk about first issues, traumatic content, the healing powers of comic books, and more before giving Angelo (and you listeners) a few recommendations.
In the second half of the show, we talk about some of the best and worst games that are based on comic books. We take things by time periods: The Golden Age (1977-1994), The Silver Age (1995-2004) and The Modern Age (2005-2013). John has a triumphant story about The Silver Surver for NES, Julian waxes nostalgic for the arcade brawlers, Angelo has a little bit of trivia about Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage, and Patrick has a crush on Oracle.

Over the past few years, I steer away from superhero comics. There are just too many of them. I look for comics that have stories that are more original or at least not what I'm use to reading from my past. Saga is my main comic. I refuse to miss it. My wife won't allow me to miss it.

Been a big fan of Vaughn since Ex Machina. Such a good writer at weaving current affairs into surreal or hyperreal stories.t
This one has been on my radar since I heard about it. I just don't feel comfortable picking it up knowing that I have a couple of unread trades at home.
Yeah, me and John are pretty dyed in the wool superhero fans. However, if you ever want to give a hero book a shot, try Invincible. It's an amazing story with loveable characters, but the universe is pretty much self-contained. While he exists in the larger Image world you don't have to worry about reading anything else.
I think I saw that comic looking through my Previews catalog. I'll take a look at it.
Eventhough I have yet to finish it, Transmetropolitan is still one of my favourite series. I feel bad because I only have 4 books left to go, but I have not touched it in a couple of years.
As far as superhero comic books, I absolutely loved what I read of Loeb and Sale's collaborations. Then there is All-Star Superman...
I love Loeb and Sale's Batman stories, and like I mentioned in the cast, I think The Long Halloween is the perfect source material for my perfect Batman game.
I hear wonderful things about All-Star Superman, but I loathe Frank Quietly's art with a passion.
I migut actually like Loeb/Sales marvel colour stories just a little bit more than the Batman stories. That is saying something because The Long Holloween is the epitome of amazing.
I like Quitely's artwork for some strange reason. I think he did a good job with the Clark Kent side of Superman. He makes him look pudgy and inept. That's just me though.

I'm not into comic books at all but you guys managed to make this episode entertaining and fun nonetheless, and it's always nice when Master Gholson comes by because I like hearing him talk in-depth about comics even though I don't understand or have any of the context most of the time. I often find it can be really engaging and fun to listen to people who are super into a particular thing and educated on a subject matter that I'm unfamiliar with. You can tell they're passionate about it and you can learn a little bit as you listen.
I've rarely ever played super-hero video games. I've never finished an Arkham game but this episode's topic is quite relevant because I just bought the GOTY edition of Arkham Asylum recently. Back when Asylum came out my friend bought it and took it over to my house. I played the first 3 hours of the game and loved what I played, but when he had to take the game back I never finished it, and I never got around to buying it for myself till now. I can finally finish it!
I've been drifting away from the big 2 for a while now but once in a while they draw me in religeously like the Loki and Sif runs of Journey into Mystery and recently and more apt Injustice (seriously, it's soo good). But I recomend to anyone to try Image and Vertigo stuff then branch out from there.
I think the very first Comic based game I ever played was Spider-man on the PS I don't count Marvel vs Capcom due to the novelty.
All of the above was due to my older Brother who was my major influence, I started reading comics during Spider-man's Clone Saga, Britain had year and a half later reprints. I liked Ben Riley but it wasn't the best started

P.S. Sonic the Hedgehog is Awesome! The series has been consistently good thanks mostly to Ian Flynn
