Nerds Without Pants Episode 40: Irrational Pinball Fantasies

This episode is mantastic!

A wild bonus Nerds Without Pants appears! Command?

It's a free-flowing episode of NWP that is all about games, games, and more games! Patrick finds a new way to play FIFA and wasn't very impressed with Titanfall. He's been playing The Elder Scrolls Online, and the guys have a fun conversation about the future of the MMORPG. Angelo went down a crazy pinball machine rabbit hole, and Julian has a lot of words for Lightning Returns. (Spoiler alert: none of them are good!)

We wrap up with some talk about the PS4 digital release Outlast, Patrick's first PS4 platinum trophy,  and delve deep into the recent closure of BioShock developer Irrational Games. Things get a little businessy, but we hope you enjoy it!

I don't remember all of the thoughts that I had.

I really enjoyed Bioshock 2, so I am not going to complain if there is another game like that in the works.  I think that it sucks that Irrational is no more, but I find myself not all that surprised.  They took quite some time to make Infinite and a lot of the game had changed between the awesome gameplay videos that they had first shown and the final release.

I didn't dislike BioShock 2, but it didn't hold my attention long enough to finish it. I dunno...I'm a huge fan of sequels, but I really felt like BioShock told its story and didn't need another one. And like I said, I would have preferred if Infinite wasn't part of the BioShock franchise but its own entity.

I hear ya on wanting to move faster in FPS games. I can't stand the realism in those nowadays.

Dig the "Pinball Wizard" inclusion.

I'd be ok with annoyingly repetitive "help" characters if they were Rowlf the Gog, but they're not charming enough to be Rowlf the Dog, so Navi can go die. I like the idea of having the third time a character says something be a joke, but then it becomes a running joke with the kinds of writers that do things like how Julian described Lightning Returns and the joke gets stale quick ... better option: offer the player the opportunity to brutally murder the "help" character, but also allow you to resurrect them if needed.

I agree with the notion that there should be a strong singular vision for art, with the team mostly behind and adding to the project envisioned by the envisioner guy. As ... we'll say "mixed" ... as my feelings about what Steve Jobs exactly did at Apple are, I see the merit in having someone who can critique something until it's truly done.

I think Sony wants gamers to reproduce as much as possible, so that they have a larger consumer base. Abortion is actually a business tactic that Microsoft retroactively invented just in case a company ever tried this. They rely on robots like myself to sell their products, so ... yeah, I got nothin'.

I am a strong supporter of murdering annoying helper characters. This needs to be a thing.

Haha. Just read some of Matt R's old Misadventures of Link comic, which has some creative ideas for implementing this necessary feature.

If you've never seen egoraptor's "Sequelitis: Mega Man X" video on Youtube, it's a great illustration of why "help" characters can be so annoying and ultimately taint the experience, making the gamer feel talked down to.
