Nerds Without Pants

Nerds Without Pants Episode 45: Two Nerds, No Topic

Where we talk about stuff. And things.

We're a man down this time, so listen to Julian and Patrick talk about a bunch of stuff that nerds who do not wear pants would talk about. What are those things? Good question?

How does Star Wars strike you? Maybe some Captain America 2? No? Well, there's bound to be something in here for everyone, from Patrick's new love for MMORPGs, Julian street passing with everyone in creation, and a strange relic of early '90s arcades.

We've also got Bravely Default, FTL Advanced Edition, and plenty of comic book talk for you. Then we close things out with some talk about re-releasing 7th generation games on 8th generation hardware, PAX South,  and Julian's Final Fantasy collecting sickness.

So you don't like any of those topics? Well help us make the next episode of NWP, tough guy (or girl)! Listen to the episode to find out how, and stay tuned to PixlBit for more information.

Yeah, that's fine with me. I like hearing about the Final Fantasy bits. Can you mention when you go into different subjects on the blog here? For instance, you start talking about a Super NES arcade unit at about 40:26, something which is cool and I knew nothing about. I just mention it because your podcasts are kind of long to me, and I don't always have a lot of time to sit at the internet cafe (StarbucksTongue Out).

I can totally do that! I've pondered it here and there, but I consume podcasts start to finish even if they aren't talking about something I'm super invested in, just because I enjoy the hosts or I'm curious about something I don't know much about. But I know other people experience podcasts differently, so I'm happy to make things easier for all!

(Don't forget that you can download the show and take us with you. Laughing )

I wonder what I'd get if I had to take GREs. My Magna Cum Laude status grandfathered me into the programs I looked at.

Cap is great. I may want to start watching S.H.I.E.L.D. I want to watch Game of Thrones, but I don't download illegaly and I'm too lazy to go rent DVDs; sure as hell not paying for cable every month. Did not know about Fargo being a TV series now. Huh.

I am the opposite of coolseltzer. I'm listening to all the cute Chocobo talk and ... FF just isn't my bag. lol The part I'm interested in is how damn complicated getting something you paid for sounds, Julian. Eff the future.

Anchorman 2 was pretty good, not as good as the first one, which I don't share the same level of affinity for as other people, though it was funny. Ricky Bobby is definitely my favorite straight-comedy Will Farrel movie, with that one where he's a drunk living on the curb being my favorite of his overall.

As far as gaming in movies, what gets me is when they frantically push buttons and wave the controller everywhere in unrealistic fashion. I know people that actually do this, but the way they do it is a lot more subtle than what gets done on-screen. And that's saying something, cause the real people who do this are not subtle about it really.

What is FTL? Mothman? Mooooothman! I need you to help me out with this abbreviation!

Anyway, I'm glad The People's Republic of PBR could help you with your 3DS quest, Julian. Stopping to sleep at 34 minutes. Be back later.

Yeah, the hoops I've had to jump through for the online FF games is kinda insane.

I recommend S.H.I.E.L.D. if you are at all interested in the Marvel cinematic universe as a whole. The show has had a hard time getting its stride, but with Captain America 2 things have really picked up.

Sorry, I just assumed people would know what I was talking about. FTL was an early Kickstarter game that saw huge success. It's basically Star Trek meets Rogue or Oregon Trail. You start from scratch every time, and the encounters are all random. Combat is pseudo-RPG style: you have weapons that charge on different timers, and while dealing with enemy ships you may have to contend with fires on deck or invading away parties or systems getting damaged and needing repair on the fly. It has a fantastic soundtrack and I keep coming back to it, even though I'm not much of a PC gamer.

Great episode you guys!

I agree with Julian on Captain America. I felt it was not only great, but it's the same level of quality as The Avengers and like that one, it entered my favorites. I can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy and the second Avengers.

I should try the 3DS Pass sometime.

One of my dreams is to both visit an Arcade joint and a full convention of geekyness (be video games, anime, comics and whatnot).

I can see how someone can get into a comic without starting from the scratch. I have some of those comics. However, I still prefer to start from scratch just so I can get more into the story. Very much a reason why I like standalone stories, or collected volumes (like Fables, which I just started recently) and omnibuses.

Looking forward to the shitty game review.

I am BEYOND stoked for Guardians of the Galaxy. I love the lighter tone it seems to have, but knowing that it ties directly into the third Avengers movie gets me even more excited. Also, a big theory is that, if this movie does really well, the sky is the limit on what Marvel will adapt to film. Someone somewhere mentioned a Heroes for Hire movie starring Terry Crews as Luke Cage and Jason Statham as Iron Fist and everytime I imagine that I. Can't. Stop. Grinning.

I'm interested in these new Spider-Man trades, especially after having really liked the admittedly very flawed TASM2. In fact, I think the comics part of this podcast was my favorite.

So Julian, since you're so close to San Antonio, are you a Spurs fan?

I think I know what you mean when you say you'd have preferred the Gummi Bear game.Look forward to the Seanbaby-style review.

I just thought of this today-- I'd like to hear NWP's thoughts about "Geekdom" and/or "Nerdism" and how it became its own trend. So much so, to the point where people who previously wouldn't dare be described as a "nerd" now seek geek cred. And it all over the place now.

The way I see it, true nerdsgeeks really didn't describe themselves as such (back in the day)-- they were given those labels by the "cool kids" and jocks. Those who were called nerds more or less thought of themselves as an adverage person who just happens to have a liking for [insert hobby here] but wasn't interested in necessarily categorizing himselfherself apart from regular people.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughs from the perspective of a gamer and a true nerd.

I'm actually wanting to do a show about this with my friend Kristin Hogan. Search Sparkle Fandango on YouTube and see what you think.

Cool! I checked out the Sparkle Fandango show with Mirror's Edge. Loved that whole thing about "vomit button".  Makes me laugh every time.

I also saw the ActRaiser episode. Kristin seems cool. I like her.
