Nerds Without Pants Episode 81: Significant Others

We share our love of gaming with our loved ones.

Welcome back to Nerds Without Pants! On this episode, Friend of the Show John Gholson joins us to discuss how gaming works with romantic relationships. Before that, we have some Consumption Junction fun.

John has been playing a ton of Fallout 4, and also extols the virtues of the Jack Box. We end up getting into a nice conversation regarding Silent Hill and anxiety. Angelo went on vacation and once again got bitten by the Etrian Odyssey bug, while Julian explores Final Fantasy Explorers. Patrick had a weird moment with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Our topic has to do with being in a relationship while remaining gamers. For the first time, all three Pantsless Nerds are in relationships, so we talk about how we share our hobby with the women we care about, and successes in getting them involved. John has a much different perspective, and this conversation is deep and informative while still being funny and juvenile. So, it's an episode of NWP. Happy Valentine's Day! Or, if you're single, happy Singles Awareness Day!

Outside of Mario Kart and the NES Mario games, my wife doesn't really play games.  I am just fine with that, especially since I prefer single-player games.  Since ny wife is a teacher, I can typically find some time to play games on a regular basis, but I rarely have an opportunity to binge.

It would be cool to hear from the significant others as well, though I know they may not want to come one. Now that I think of it, we should have invited Bilby on The Lower Level since she seemed to be doing stuff for Blake while we recorded.

I guess gaming and peeing in jars is all the same thing. I ... did not know that before now.

Out of curiosity, what kinds of movies does your wife watch, Angelo? I'm a huge cinephile as well as a gamer, so I'm always interested in what interests others. Edit: I dig character drama in movies as well. I've grown to like movies for their characters much more than their plots/effects.

Media interests are something I think about well after philosophical agreements, but it is interesting the impact they have on two people coming together or growing apart. That's a really cool thing about the wood cutting and piano story.

John has movies at South by Southwest? I have always wanted to go there; hmmm ...

Julian, is the Deadpool character's love for Wham! comic book canonical or was that mostly the movie?

Really cool topic and yes Julian (aside from one part that was a bit weird, might have been my computer and some crackling off Patrick's mic) the audio was great!

My friend is from the south, has a gun under his bed, and is vegan. Let's not be stereotypin'. And Texas IS the promise land, Angelo. Come on down, we actually have a shit ton of Grimaldi's Pizzerias that import NY water for their crusts (at least in Dallas area). But yeah, Whataburger chicken biscuits sound good right now.

People travel out of state for SONIC?! WHY?! It blew my mind when Cary told me Jack in the Box was regional; always thought that was a national chain.

Now I'm hungry ... might go eat some more of that half price candy I bought yesterday for Singles' Apprecation Day 2016 (Feb. 15).

My wife is microphone shy. She hates even using a phone, so I'm probably never gonna be able to talk her into even saying "Hi" on the show. I'm working on it though!

My wife will watch anything, literally ANYTHING, even if it's targeted at tweens, so long as it's a character drama.

I absolutely plan on visiting Texas. I have more friends than just Julian that live down there. The Sonic thing is really weird, but you have to remember that here in upstate NY, we don't have car hop service, so most of the people who seek them out are doing it for the novelty of having that, rather than just getting to eat really good trashy fast food. Oddly, there is one local place that's privately owned that has car hop service, but that's the only one I know of in all of New York, and it's the old school style car hop with a over sized menu board stuck to the side of the building and stuff like that. No fancy electronic intercoms or credit card readers.

Yeah, I imagine NY might be a bit too population dense for a proper car hop in many places. A&W used to be a car hop place, but ones I've been in are just typical fast food joints.

That's true of NYC, but the rest of the state is pretty rural actually. It's the weather. Winters here are too long and too cold usually for people to really run an effective car hop.

I've been thinking, since my wife is into trash character dramas, maybe I can talk her into watching Scott Pilgrim. I still haven't seen it.

I ... liked but didn't love it.

It's my favorite piece of Edgar Wright's directing, and I love the soundtrack.

Also, I have a big, soft spot in my heart for Brandon Routh.

I know next to nothing about Deadpool in the comics, but I am going to bet that that gag was a Ryan Reynolds thing. It totally worked though.

There's such a disconnect with me and my girlfriend related to gaming. It's not in her interest at all, so I kind of hide it from her and never talk about it.

Is she supportive of it, or does she think it's a waste of your time?

I get the feeling she thinks it's a waste of time, so I avoid the subject.

Sadface.
