Nerds Without Pants Episode 82: Fighting Street

A Street Fighter veteran, pro, and rookie walk into a bar...

Welcome back to another edition of Nerds Without Pants! We are joined by JD this time to get into some deep talk about Street Fighter V, but we save that for the end of the show in case fighting games aren't your thing (like Angelo).

JD has fallen head over heels for Xenoblade Chronicles X. Angelo can't get Etrian Odyssey out of his head, just like Patrick sees Persona everywhere. We slip into some discussion about the idea of Assassin's Creed taking a year off, waiting for the Final Fantasy VII remake, and Julian goes on a rant about the cost of video games today. We close out the first part of the show by talking about that there Deadpool movie and what our thoughts are about the upcoming Batman v Superman flick.

After that, it's all Street Fighter V. Hopefully, we don't put you to sleep the way we did Angelo (true story!), as JD and Patrick do their best to defend the game from Julian's righteous indignation. Things get heated, but only because all three remaining Pantsless Ones are passionate about this topic. We hope you'll chime in with your thoughts in the comments below!

Next episode we will be doing a "movie club" style discussion about Atari: Game Over. Check out the movie and come back in two weeks for our discussion!

30 minutes in I'mlost on the JRPG stuff, but I'm digging the Digimon love. I remember loving when that series got kind of dark when a Puppet digimon and some others show up they have to fight.

With any game I put down after like 10 hours, I completely forget what the hell is going on and either start over or keep going mildly confused.

It's crazy how long a game can take to create ... then flop. I actually noticed the same thing about Braid in Indie Game: The Movie and also thought of PoP. Didn't Max Payne come out before Braid and have a time mechanic?

My only comment on KH II is how amusing I find the upcoming title's title: Kingdom Hearts II.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Seriously though ... tf is that?

It's ok, Julian, I understood that reference. I also know exactly what you mean with the whining about prices and I am also on your side in HAVE A SINGLE PLAYER EXPERIENCE.

That's the hour mark for me. I'll come back for the SFV stuff.

I could write an essay on the absurd naming conventions of Square Enix for the past 15 years.

Deadpool in X-Men Origins:Wolverine was, according to Ryan Reynolds in an interview with Google, mostly due to the writers' strike at the time.

I'm still on team Keira Knightley for Cable.

I'm excited cautiously for Batman v. Superman since it's two days after my birthday, but I did not like MoS and I feel you on Jesse Eisenberg as Lex. I think they're playing him like a cartoon Mark Zuckerberg. I'm torn on comics research and completely on y'all's side with ... not only Dumbledore, but the movies in general not being as well written as the HP books.

Superman doesn't die from dousing himself in Kryptonite?

Ok ... NOW let's talk SFV. 1:23 mark for me.

Sounds like it's the perfect time for other fighting games to gain some interest.

Hey, I like Etrian Odyssey too!

I love those rap battle songs. They're just rediculous.

That particular rap battle is Star Bomb, a collaboration between Arin/Egoraptor and Dan of Ninja Sex Party (both in Game Grumps) and is not associated with the YouTube channel Epic Rap Battle.

I'd put a "The More You Know" graphic here, but it's really more a "The more a neckbearded keyboard warrior tells you out of turn" situation ...

Having rented SFV, yeah ... it's incomplete. I do notice the bouncier boobs thing. Never really did that in 2D iterations ...

I lucked out with my rental coming a week or so after launch, so online was fine for me. To Patrick's DLC point ... I just don't trust Capcom's word when it comes to not nickel and diming the consumer. For my money (literally), it's too early for me to tell if they mean what they've said, especially given their history.

I share Patrick's frustration with online fighting. Even with beginner matchmaking, every fighter I've ever played has online players that can combo out the ass. I've never rage quit though, but Quitality sounds like an interesting system. Still need to play MKX myself.

I never played SFIV outside of PlayStation Now, but it felt slow to me. So on that level, I think SFV has improved mechanics. I would have wanted a more in-depth tutorial re: the mechanics in SFV, but then GGXrd has spoiled me for all time in that regard. I never did have to deal with the Dualshock 3 though. I'm still curious what makes everyone think those controllers are SO shitty when they look basically like other PlayStation controllers.

Ken's moveset worked so much better for me as a player than Ryu's did. I was surprised theyy were not direct mirrors. Lol at SF 2010. Only know of it from the AVGN episode. Looked interesting.

I don't HATE only 16 characters, but it does seem like a small roster now. Especially with my playing Injustice now, it's a dwarf cast in comparison. Apparently, I really need to play MKX ...

Fuck you Patrick, Tekken and Smash Bros. extra modes made those games exceptional to me! And when I was growing up, I played SFII Turbo story mode the most when not 2player. Julian and I have similar fighting game experiences I think. I like to switch up characters. This "maining" bullshit can make fighters feel like a chore to me sometimes. It's cool as an option for more serious players, but for casual guys like me I'm not trying to win tournaments, I just want to play a fun game.

Where I will say I disagree is I've seen worse loading times. I agree they were not good, but it wasn't as bad for me as Julian maybe. It was noticeable online though.

I was glad I wasn't stuck with playing only one character online like I initially though, but I agree it was weird. Also, Patrick, I apologize for the language earlier. It was unprofessional. I should have simply said everything you said was wrong without swearing. I am sorry.

I'll be honest, I never liked battle lounges in any game; just match me up with someone or I'll get a friend on. Maybe the emptiness of lobbies in ArcSystem games I play soured me on the concept.

I do agree with small roster balance and I like the characters, but damn it's a small roster for $60. Killer Instinct was the reason I was leaning toward Xbox One at launch. God, I hate exclusivity.

I like how, in the same podcast, Julian mentions $1 games beuing superfluous and getting less and paying more on AAA titles, and being correct on both counts. I disagree about III and IV though. I loved III and thought IV was slow. Huh.

I really like the V characters as well and I loved the changes to Ken. Whose side am I on here?! Laura ... there are some boobs regardless of glitches I don't remember from II or III. lol

I feel like you guys glossed over my biggest issues, which are the lack of single player modes. The story mode doesn't count it's so barren, the arcade mode isn't there. I can see what you're saying about SF though Julian. I think that's a cultural change in fighting games overall though, mostly because of online and tournaments. Yeah, there were rulers of the arcade cabinets back when, but most of us playing were casual. Playing online, I feel that's reversed. In fact, didn't they release SFV early because of EVO? As a casual fan, I feel pushed out of the franchise, so I'm curious how they plan on drawing me/us in?

I went into training mode ... I learned very little. Hey JD, tell them to put KI on PS4 and I will INSTANTLY play it. I really wanted SFV to tell me when certain moves were appropriate cause I had no idea.

MadCatz? Errr ... there's another brand I have misgivings about. See, $30 is a lot different than $60, so now I see why Patrick's so accepting. I am now more accepting of Patrick as a result.

Julian's argument crux is how I feel about people who tell me to look online for how to do things in Dark Souls/Bloodborne.

Oh I've seen that Atari movie on Netflix a while ago. It's the one revolving around the NM E.T. dig, right? But also goes over the actual reasons the industry crashed before Nintendo.

Great show, sorry for the text walls.

You should've done each paragraph as a different post under a different pseudonym.

Also, single player modes in fighting games gets me interested. Story modes even moreso. Basically I just want a brawler like Final Fight and not PvP.

Tekken had brawler modes, essentially. I really liked them.

I'd like to try one of those sometime.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on SF III and IV. I tried as hard as I could to get into III, but the overall slowness, difficult to learn parry system, and the atrocious character designs completely turned me off. Like I said, Super SF IV is one of my all-time favorites in the series with an excellent cast of characters and an easy to pick up but deep fighting system.

Mad Catz was synonymous with garbage when I worked in retail, but they have really stepped up their quality since they got the official arcade stick deal for SF IV. Iove my stick for the PS4, and as you'll hear in episode 83 it is easy to mod, which I will be looking into very soon.

Everything you just said about III is how I felt about what little I played of IV and vice versa ...

I have a MadCatz Gamecube controller ... it's shit. Good to know they've stepped their game up if I see a newer model at Hastings I guess.

Ugh. Necro, Twelve, Q, Urien are, in my opinion, some of the worst character designs Capcom ever came up with. They don't feel like Street Fighter characters. They feel like rejects from Darkstalkers.

Super Step Contributing Writer

Hmmm ... they aren't great now that I've looked them up to remember, but I loved the sprites for the original SF II cast that were in SF III and seeing them in motion in that game. In general, I liked the larger character sprites.

This is about the bonus episode I just listened to. You talked about Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the secrets in the game and it made me think of the talk around the Dark Souls games. Do you think From Software took some inspiration taken from the Castlevania series?

Julian Titus Senior Editor

03/20/2016 at 12:45 PM

I think that's a distinct possibility. Symphony of the Night definitely informed the way a lot of developers structure their games. It's also something that builds on From Software's older games. The Souls games have some shared DNA with the King's Field series, which was another game that kind of just plopped you in a world and said "go".

I played KIing's Field: The Ancient City on PS2. It really threw me because it was so slow to start and not much happens right away. i should've stuck with it to see how it would play, but I didn't.
