Nerds Without Pants Episode 116: Varsity Blues

We should probably try to play some newer games...

And we’re back! The E3 schedule has really thrown off the Nerds Without Pants, and this isn’t a normal show format. No, this is an all Consumption Junction edition of the podcast. We’re a man (bot?) down, since Angelo isn’t here, so Julian and Patrick get together to talk about…a lot of old games, actually.

No, really. We’re talking about games that we’ve been talking about for years. Rocksmith. Final Fantasy XIV. Hearthstone. Oh, Julian did play the latest Fire Emblem game, so there’s that. But then we talk about Diablo III, so IDK. We end things with some talk on the futility of learning how to play fighting games, and Patrick’s workout corner.

Next time, we return to our classic show format! You still have time to submit your picks for Stage Select and Chrono Crossing if you haven’t already. If you have, no need to resubmit.

STAGE SELECT: What character (or characters) would you want on a novelty roll of toilet paper?

CHRONO CROSSING: What is your favorite game of 1992?

SUBMIT YOUR SELECTIONS BY 8:30 CENTRAL TIME ON JULY 20.

FEATURED MUSIC:

Foo Fighters- My Hero

Final Fantasy XIV- Terra’s Theme (remix)

Janus Stark- Every Little Thing Counts

Caroline’s Spine- Varsity Blues

You are also influencing my need to play things, as I recently had a week off work, and I was bored... And I kept reading tweets about Fire Emblem... Which then led to me buying a 3DS along with all the Fire Emblems and Bravely Default, because I listened to the NWP about it not long ago. I haven't played much of Echoes yet, (Or Bravely Default) but I put about 60 plus hours into Fates. I do not regret this decision so far.

Also I would like to defend Injustice 2 just a little bit as I've really enjoyed it personally. The fighting system in it may not be the greatest, but I really do like all the stuff they packed into the single player aspect. I'm not a competitive fighting game... guy at all. I avoid playing them online like it's the plague, but I had a real good time doing all the missions for loot boxes of gear and leveling up my characters. I thought it was a pretty cool thing, and I wish more fighting games would do something like that. The story mode was also pretty cool. It just felt like there was always something to do, which for a fighting game, is pretty rare. The fighting itself is mediocre, but I kept going back to it for all the other aspects.

I also apologize for putting in my stage select/chrono crossing stuff in early, but I have a terrible memory sometimes, and I like to do things while they're fresh in my head.

That makes me very happy, actually. I think because it means that we are talking about things in such a way that makes listeners take interest. I know I have taken chances on games or comics or music that I normally wouldn't have because of podcasts like the Giant Bombcast, the Comics Conspiracy, or Rebel FM, and I'm glad that we can do the same for our listeners in some small way.

Oh yea, I know this is going to sound kind of crazy/suck upish of me to say, but as a listener to both of the video game podcasts you mentioned there, I actually like this one the best just because of the personalities. It's starting to freak me out how close my opinions are to this show's. So when you guys recommend a game, I know I'm probably going to like it. And I love Bombcast and Rebel FM for my video game news, but I'll take NWP's game suggestions over their's 9/10 times. And for tracking purposes I'm almost to the Rob episodes of the old stuff. I have no idea what I'm going to listen to at work after that.

I read this when you posted it, but didn't have a chance to comment at the time. This made my week, in a week that was really awful. Thank you!
