Nerds Without Pants Episode 124: 1985

Hot DAMN, 1985 was a banner year for music!

Welcome, one and all, to the end of the line. For Chrono Crossing, that is. Yes, it’s the final installment of Nerds Without Pants’ first listener interactive segment, and what a ride it’s been! Join us for a look back across thirty years of gaming, and a look forward for the next year of NWP.

We kick things off with a lengthy discussion on the Chrono Crossing picks that have come before. Interesting patterns emerge once you see every selection side by side, and the Pantsless Ones can’t help but get sidetracked…almost constantly.

After that, we are Chrono Crossing for the last time, all the way to 1985. While the game selections won’t shock you, it’s still a fun discussion with some big revelations.

Be sure to stick around after the TARDIS takes off to find out about the new segment that will be replacing Chrono Crossing in 2018. Enjoy!

Sad to see Chrono Crossing go but I'm interested in the next interactive segment. To answer your question Julian, I can't recall when I finally turned my controller around the right way. I just remember Super Mario Bros. being the only game I did that with. I was around 4 at the time when I played. I know for sure I was playing Super Mario 3 normal. It probably changed when I got a gameboy.

Got to say this Stage Select is tough since I don't typically have game time without a T.V. playing right next to me. We all know these musical Stage Selects are just to get Angelo some new tunes for work, lol. Anyways here goes.

Stage Select: Shop Themes (In no particular order.)

Undertale: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YTeUdtilREo

One of the newer shop themes to come around from another game with an excellent soundtrack. Very well done.

(Angelo try "Hopes and Dreams" and "Battle Against a True Hero," from the Undertale soundtrack also. Some of my favorites. Let me know what you think)

Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b7c1KDmxKUA

One of many amazing tracks from the Scott Pilgrim game. Hopefully it gets rereleased.

Sonic 2: Casino Night: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B8yHNMW1OU0

Not a shop theme but sure sounds like one. This one hits my nostalgia bone.

Resident Evil 4: Serenity: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UIWrC37i_vk

Like any RE a nice somber theme to relax to before you go out into the madness.

Stage Select

3. Larry Butz's theme from Ace Attorney-This is my pick for music I'd expect in a shop. There's half a dozen great picks from Ace Attorney for this, but nothing fits the frustration I feel from going out shopping than trying to get information from Ace Attorney's infamous moron Larry Butz trying to cover up his stupid shenanigans.

2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire shop theme

Even though the GBA Pokemon games are my least favorite in the series, they have the best music in the series without a doubt. It was so good the DS Pokemon games even reused it.

1. Rahman Origins: Tricky Treasure Chase- Going a different direction for this. Picture that scene from countless Christmas movies and TV specials where someone scrambles to finish their Christmas shopping at the last minute, usually leading to a cheesy musical montage with lots of running and fighting. Now imagine this plays during said montage

Hopefully I'm not too late. If so, my badsies...

Stage Select:

3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMwv8MwYimM I have a feeling someone on the podcast who put some hours into this game who's name rhymes with hat trick has already said this one, but the Junes song from Persona 4 was one catchy jingle. Everything's great at your Junes... Until high school kids start falling into televisions.

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vuzo25ZLsk I'm not really the world's biggest Earthbound fan, but I do remember this music. It sounds like the music that would play in the sporting goods section of Walmart if each section had a soundtrack. If I ever were to buy a shotgun, I think this is the song I want to have playing.

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KcY745Qbd0 I want to buy so many things to the Mario 2 character select song. I want to high step through stores and throw things into a cart with a big animated smile on my face. Or better yet, I want to go to the Funco Pop headquarters and throw all the pops into a cart that's on fire, because they don't deserve to exist. I don't trust anything with black, soulless eyes. You know what else has black soulless eyes? The devil. And I've never seen Satan and a Funco Pop in the same room together. Coincidence? I think not... But yea, Mario 2 Character Select song. Love it.

My Episode Comment: I'm excited for this pack watch thing. Believe me, if there is a way to work Chun Li in there, I will do it. I will find a way. I believe in myself. Good episode, sorry my comment is so late, my job is actively trying to kill me at the moment. Stay fierce pantsless dudes!
