Nerds Without Pants Episode 184: The Mod Squad

Control Alt My Feet was robbed.

Hey, it’s another episode of Nerds Without Pants! It’s a pretty good one, I think. This post is lackluster at best because I got two hours of sleep last night, which is not even long enough to sleep through this episode. That makes sense, right? Cool.

Stage Select:

My first selection is "Samus Aran, Galactic Warrior" from Super Metroid. However, it's at its most epic when combined with the sound effects and visuals of Samus's brutal beatdown of Mother Brain after Mother Brain kills the baby Metroid. That is the single best example of an angry "mama bear" in a video game, all without dialogue or a cut scene.

My second selection is "Fight to the Death" from Final Fantasy XII. This plays during the battle with Vossler, who has betrayed the party and turned the Dusk Shard over to the Empire. However, Vossler didn't betray the party out of a desire for power, he did so in the belief that it would save the lives of his countrymen rather than see their lives lost in what he felt was a futile struggle. He was misguided, but was still a "son of Dalmasca" at heart.

Cage Match:

Voting for Cyberpunk on this one. My enjoyment of Witcher 3 and like of cyberpunk games combined with my prejudice against licensed titles wins the day here.

P.S. Still trying to get in touch with y'all about contributing a few pieces to the site. Laughing

Stage Select

Halo 3: Finish the Fight- Hearing this song while two Scarabs fall from the sky at once is still my favorite moment in the series and made the game feel so epic.

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness: Mirror B's Theme- So imagine you're playing one of the most mediocre RPGs ever made, then all of the sudden two grunts mention their boss Mirror B is here, followed by a guy in a purple disco suit and enormous Pokeball colored afro moonwalking in and this song starts playing

Mirror B should be in every Pokémon game.

Cage Match

Cyberpunk wins because Avengers would build a strategy around Spider-Man (based on that old movie Terminator) then forget he's only in the PlayStation version and they're working with their PC crew

STAGE SELECT: Hey, have I mentioned I like Deus Ex yet?  Deus Ex, Deus Ex, Deus Ex!  Seriously, though, a new remix CD of Deus Ex was just released by the original composers so to celebrate that I'm going to submit the PS2 orchestral version of the Deus Ex theme.  It's epic:

For my second pick, since my last one was futuristic I challenged myself by going retro.  I'm going to submit an unused song by the best Famicom game to never reach the United States: Gimmick!'s Strange Memories of Death.  It was the only game to use the SUNSOFT 5B sound chip.  Just bask in those three extra sound channels:

I also have an extra if you need it and also because: Final Fantasy.  One of my first posts here ever was about the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta fan event (which recently wrapped up for the year) and unfortunately I didn't get to bring it up at the time despite planning on it because of devastating computer problems.  But at least I can throw in a link here for Final Fantasy V's fan favorite Battle at the Big Bridge:

VIDEO GAME CAGE MATCH: Still having computer issues but I'm going to find out if I can get some odds on it here.  Let's see... 100 to 1 odds that Mister Doctor Man wins.  Wait!  That wouldn't have had even been useful last week!  Stupid thing.  While I continue to work on this just put my vote to Cyberpunk.  I mean, with my stage select picks these last two podcasts that should be obvious.  Actually, the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided team worked on The Avengers I'll shut up now give it to Cyberpunk.
