My GOTY was Shin Megami Tensei V. Worth the four years I waited for it. I know people said 2021 was a weak year, but between Nintendo, Capcom, and Sega, I found plenty to play.

Cage Match:

I'm going with Chrono Cross, but that's more by default. It wasn't really as good as Chrono Trigger. Due to limited gaming funds, I passed over it on its initial release in favor of Valkyrie Profile, which went on to become one of my favorite PS1 games. Playing Chrono Cross later affirmed my original decision.

MY GOTY last year was New Pokemon Snap.  You can read the rest of my picks here:

Chrono Cross wins out for me, but I've never been interested in those Devil May Cry games.  I reviewed Chrono Cross way back when for The Dallas Morning News.  Really felt like it should've been its own thing, and not a sequel to anything.  The battle system was just a cleverly disguised card game.  Graphics and music were nice, though.  I Am Setsuna felt more like a Chrono Trigger sequel than Chrono Cross did.  With a few storyline tweaks, I Am Setsuna could've been like a Chrono Trigger side story set in the ice age era.
