A Plumber Saves an Industry - Mario Mania #1

Matt takes an extensive look at Mario’s first console outing, Super Mario Bros.

Final Thoughts

Mario’s first outing is still a great game. It plays well, it is very fun, and has a lot of secrets to discover. It was (and still is) for a game released in 1985, far more advanced than any other platformer made before then. On the other hand, the unscrolling screen mechanic is annoying and really limits the amount of exploration thanks to the fixed scrolling and lack of returning to previous levels. And while I know the graphics aren’t anything great (really, they aren’t) we are looking at a very early glimpse of the plumber we know and love. Yet in the span of four years, we will see Mario evolve and grow into the pop-culture icon he is today.

I just popped in the first Super Mario Bros into my NES and became addicted. I forgot how great this game is. This is the kind of title you buy, no matter what system its on. Including the All-Stars port. I actually got farther than I've ever gone this time, World 5-4.

Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
