Double The Fun? - Mario Mania #2

Two games in one part! Can you guess which one I like better?

SMB2 USA's Enemies

The following are enemies that originally debuted in Super Mario Bros. 2 USA that have also shown up in subsequent Mario games:

Birdo

Oh boy, this one is going to be fun. According to the SMB2 USA instruction manual, Birdo is a male egg-spitting dinosaur with a bit of gender confusion. Basically, he likes to dress up like a girl. When you are not worried about which gender Birdo is (and thankfully NoA made it easier for all of us by making Birdo a girl), you have to worry about beating her at the end of each stage (with an exception here and there). Birdo comes in three different color variants: pink, red and green. Pink only spits eggs, red spits both eggs and fireballs, while green just spits fireballs. Too bad her recent appearances have just been in side-series games like Mario Kart and Mario Party/sports titles. Birdo was always a female in Japan, and was named “Catherine.”

Bob-omb

Easily my favorite enemy in the entire game. Bom-Ombs have made appearances in every single mainline Mario game since USA, but as you notice in the screen shot, they used to have arms and look like a bowling ball. Regardless of appearances, Bom-Ombs are both dangerous and useful; dangerous because they will explode after a few seconds and the explosion sprite is the size of four square foreground tiles made into a square. On the other hand, you can turn them against your enemies if well placed and they explode just like the normal bombs you find elsewhere in the game.

Ninji

A black star-like devil enemy that hops in one place, and sometimes rushes towards you while hopping randomly. Ninjis are excellent for creating jumping shortcuts for Luigi, but not much else. Their later appearances have been very sparse; they made an appearance in Super Mario World at the very end of the game, and as an NPC in Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64.

Pidgit

Pidgits are bird-like creatures that ride on carpets in certain stages. Jump on top of the Pidgit, throw it off and the carpet is yours. Pidgits are absolutely useless, and have only made a single appearance since this game as an enemy in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

Pokey

This smiling cactus/snowman hybrid enemy is safe to jump on, unlike his many post-SMB2 appearances. Depending on the game, Pokey has from three to five body segments. Grabbing the head will not kill him, but throwing a veggie at the base of him counts as killing three other enemies at once. He’s easily the best enemy to farm out for points in the Mario Advance re-release of SMB2.

ShyGuy

Why do they call it a ShyGuy? Hell if I would know, but SMB2 USA’s most common enemy serves as the Goomba and Koopa Troopa of the game. In the NES version they're red and pink. Reds are like green Koopas as they will walk over cliffs, while pinks, like red Koopas, will not. ShyGuys return as the most common enemies in Yoshi’s Island, and have appeared in the Mario RPG and Mario Party series, as well as the sport games.

Snifit

The ShyGuy cousin that shoots bullets out of its mouth. That’s basically all you need to know. Has made re-appearances in Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario RPG, and Mario Party 3.

Mouser

The boss of World 1 and World 3. Mouser is a giant mouse who throws bombs at you that you have to throw back to explode on him. Like the other bosses covered below, he doesn’t appear in any other Mario games.

Clawgrip

World 5’s giant crab boss that throws rocks at you. You don’t have to hit a weak point for massive damage, thankfully, because it doesn’t really have one.

FryGuy

World 4’s giant fireball enemy spits fireballs and turns into smaller FryGuys after you have hit him enough.

Tryclyde

A three-headed snake that spits fireballs and stays in one spot is the boss of World 2. Imagine him being Chaos Zero in Sonic Adventure, and you will realize how easy he is.

Wart

The final boss of the game, and the only one to make a cameo outside of the Mario series in Link’s Awakening. Wart hates vegetables but somehow keeps a vegetable spawning machine in the boss room you fight him in. Also barfs magic bubbles that damage you.

Pidgits totally appeared in Super Mario World. I should know, I played the game for Halloween! To see a pidgit, one must complete the bonus world obtained by finding the secret exit in the last Star Road stage, then find a stage with horizontally-fired Bullet Bills. Instead of Bullet Bills, Pidget Bills are fired! Or something like that. They're definitely pidgits, though.
