PB & Jason Issue 69: The Cost of Choice

A Final Fantasy XIII-2 Amazon.com preorder gives players a boss battle and party member. Why do the "when" and "where" matter when making a new videogame purchase?

This week's PB & Jason takes the idea of exclusive game content offered as retailer-specifc preorder bonus to the task, specifically in relation of Final Fantasy XIII-2. In short, I think the idea is ridiculous, and I'm surprised to see Square Enix using this tactic for a Final Fantasy title.

Oh, and I talk about Jesse's Nano Assault review, Bastion & Nick, a certain PixlTalk commentor is taken to the task, I bring up the games I'll be playing over Christmas, suggest a few reasons against buying the Vita at launch, and finally, I wrap up with some thoughts on the recent 3DS update to the Mii Plaza.

Enjoy this week's best ever issue of PB & Jason! Merry Christmas to all!

Interesting topic. When buying a game, I always put an emphasis on where and when. Some games I can live without getting until a GOTY edition drops ("Skyrim") or the price hits rockbottom ("Batman: Arkham City"), while others I need on day 1, because the pre-order bonuses are so sexy I can't resist.

Just for listeners, that free PSN shooter Jason's referring to is Super Stardust HD and it is also an amazing little game!

I absolutely agree with your comments on Pre-Order DLC, I wish games came packed in with EVERYTHING that was made for it at time of the game. If Game company X decides to make more content for game Y a year after it's release, then I think that's totally fine. When game Y launches with a ton of DLC ready to go that you have to pay extra for, that's just cheating the consumer out of the full product that they just laid down $60+ for.

I remember the good old days when the best games were absolutely packed full of content when you buy it, not with this selective and held back DLC that just prevents people from having the full experience without paying extra money for something they already bought.

For what it's worth, I didn't enjoy Bastion either in it's current form. I think it would play better for me as a portable game. I've mentioned this in every post on the game on this website, but I would pre-order this game (even though I despise the practice) if it came out for the 3ds. I do think the game is worthy of the majority of the praise it's received though.

I also really enjoyed the exclusivity / DLC rant. Well done.

Looks like the certain PixlBit user I called out was lucky this time, and gets another week to make a post...

I got called out in this episode! And I finally heard about it all this time later, that's crazy. Well, I have finally found this podcast just by chance, I replied, and fufilled my call-out lol.

When it comes to where and when to buy a game, I'm not a fan of all the pre-order bonuses and carrots that try and get me to buy from a certain outlet at a certain time. Several years ago I didn't really mind, I just went along with it all, but around the time that Assassin's Creed 2 came out is when I started becoming opposed to it. When I was looking to preorder A2 Amazon had this deal where a preorder would get you an extra area of the game to explore and that rubbed me the wrong way. Do you remember that? At the time I was really tight on cash and didn't have enough to preorder it at that time, I ended up having to get A2 a few weeks after launch and I felt cheated that I didn't get to explore an entire area that was designed. I don't know if it was relevant to the story, if it had missions, if there was anything of substance there at all, but I thought it was lame that they would be willing to leverage level designs and areas in their pre-order carrot business.

That whole Assassin's Creed 2 pre-order thing and the extra content it contained might have amounted to nothing and had no impact on the game or people's experiences, but the concept of it it still rubbed me the wrong way and the damage has been done.
