Hey PixlPeople! Here are some general Mafia rules we can base our games on. I'm sure each game will have variances to it but this seems to be a good general guideline for us. Since this will be a first for us we have a lot of flexibility in what we do. I know I like to play using 'themes' for each game and basing special rules and roles around the theme.

We can discuss general rules, questions and game ideas here. Give us your thoughts and ideas!

General Play

Victory Conditions- Players win the game by having the townies eliminateall of the mafia or the mafia bringing the number of townies to equal or less than their numbers.

Set Up- At the beginning of the game, the host will PM each player with their role. Mafia will be notified of who the other mafia players are in the game as they work as a team. Townie players start out unaware of who is who and must use their powers, whits and luck to determine who to align themselves with in order to win.

Host- This is the person running the game; similar to the Dungeon Master or storyteller in other games. This person makes the rules and also makes judgements if and when there is a loophole, conflict or unclear situation in the rules. They do not participate in the game. At any time all players may ask questions of the host and they will get back as they are able with an answer.

Day Thread- This is where the majority of the game will typically take place. Each day is started by the host with an initial story (with results from the previous day and nights activity if applicable) and then the players all make posts and try to influence the daily voting. Each day thread will open in the morning and close at a predetermined time known as Thread Lock.

Story and Results- Each day thread opens with a story post and rules. The story is meant as a fun and superfluous way to engage the players and detail the previous day and night actions. After the story the results section will detail all of the hard facts such as who was killed, the true role of the deceased and what (if any) night actions were used and their effects. Both parts will be clearly marked so as to avoid confusion.

Thread Lock- Because life can have strange ways of manifesting itself in our lives, though a specified time is chosen to be Thread Lock, the Day Thread will remain active up until the host (or an appointed substitute) locks the thread. This avoids any concerns about people getting their posts in seconds (or minutes) after the end time and whether they will count. So in summary, any vote counts until the Host locks the thread.

PMs- Private Messages may be sent to players at any time of the game and you may say whatever you wish in them. Only PMs sent by the Host should be trusted as 100% fact since anyone and everyone can and will lie to you to get ahead.

Activity and Inactivity- In order to ensure a swift, smooth and enjoyable game players must post in a day thread at least once every three days or they will die due to inactivity. They do not have to vote every day and it does not have to be a vote or even anything substantial.

Voting- The player with the most votes at the end of the day (adding in any special power effects on those votes) is eliminated from the game and their true role is revealed. In the event of a tie no one will die by vote that day. Players will type out the players name they wish to vote to kill and bold the name. If they change their mind later, they should go back and unbold and strikethrough the old vote and then post the new, separate vote. Example: (Old Post) Vote Nick; (New Post) Vote Jason. The vote does not have to be the only thing in their post, but make sure it is clearly marked as shown. Players can change their vote as often as they like but must make sure only one vote is active at once. If there is a mistake and multiple votes are marked then the most recent vote will be counted and the rest ignored.

Death- If you are voted out or killed by a player action you cannot post in any current or new Day Threads and are removed from play in the game immediately. You may not talk about specifics of the game or what you knew until the game is over. You may post general frustration in the Dead Thread which will be created for you to badger and egg on other players or vent your frustrations at your new ethereal state.

Night Actions- All powers marked as ‘Night Actions’ can be submitted any time of day and up to one hour past the thread lock and they will occur simultaneously at night 1 hour past Thread Lock.

Day Actions- Actions marked as 'Day Action' occur while the thread is open and their effects occur immediately at thread Lock or when the Host confirms the action depending on the specific details of each action.

Performing an Action- All actions are performed by sending a PM to the host unless otherwise stated in the rules of the game.

Townie Roles

Doctor- the doctor can select one person to protect throughout the night. This will make them immune to any action that would kill them. Doctor Kit cannot protect someone from being voted out of the game. Night Action

Investigator- This allows the player to receive information from the host about a single player. Each night the Investigator give the host a name via PM and the host replies with that person’s role for the game. Remember that the First Godfather will always come back as a townie in investigations. Night Action

Vigilante- The vigilante wants to be a good guy, but taking the law into your own hands can be dangerous. Vigilante can send in a hit at night to kill a player if they choose to. The catch is that if the target player turns out to be a townie then the vigilante will also die. Night Action

Townie- Anyone without any special role is just known as a Townie. Do not discount them, though. These are the majority of the players and their work will be tantamount to the success or failure of the game. Be sure to use your voice and vote! Day Action

Mafia Roles

Godfather- She is out to get the Townies. She puts in the hit every night to kill off one of the players. Investigations against her show a regular townie. Getting removed from play leads to the Mafia Goon becoming the Godfather. If both Godfather and the Goon are killed then the remaining mafia must decide who will be the new godfather. No one after the First Godfather will be hidden from an investigation. Night Action

Vote Changer- This person can change another player’s vote in the final tally. Day Action

Role Nullifier- This player can make it so another player cannot use their power that night. If they have no power then nothing happens. Night Action

Mafia Goon- They have no special powers, but they will automatically become the Godfather if the original one is removed from the game. She will show as her true role during an investigation both before and after becoming the Godfather.

I've only ever played Mafia in physical groups of people, so it's hard to imagine how it will work in a forum. Can't watch body language. But hey, I'll try. Count me in!

That is 10, pretty good turnout for our first game. If anyone has any questions about the game feel free to bring them up now. If everything is clear and set I can set a start date for the game.

One other matter: at another forum I play at we make the weekend one long, single day running from Friday until the end of Sunday since people there tended to be away doing other things in life. How do people feel about doing this? I plan to start on the 5th of May (Monday) so it is possible we could finish in a week and not have the weekend at all.

I’ll also put out a call to some old mafia friends and see if I can recruit them for our game. Having several experienced people could help move the game along better.

@daftman – I’ve played several types of live versions as well and this does capture the spirit of the game quite well. Instead of physical queues you have to read queues in writing, online activity and what people are saying in PMs.

Jason was an excellent Mafia player in his day, maybe we can bring him out of semi-retirement if he has the time.

So, Fridays-Sundays count as one day essentially?

Also, I'm not entirely clear on how this works or how actions are initiated so I'll probably die like a noob relatively soon. Regardless though, it should be fun to watch it all unfold!

I want to apoligize for the delay in the game start. School hit me harder this week than I expected and I did not realized I passed our start date. I had hoped to determine a new start date before I posted but with how things are looking that may not be for a few more weeks. I will hammer out a new start date and let you all know when that will be (most likely during my school break early next month).

Once again, apologies for the game delay and I will update everyone when we get ramped up again.

OK, after that dissaster of a school quarter, I feel I am back in the game and able to run this. I will send out new PM messages to try and get averyone back on board. I again apoligize for allowing this to fall by the way-side.

Let's shoot for a July 7th start. I would do sooner, but I figure the 4th of July holiday could wreak havoc on play schedules. Please let me know if you still want to plasy in the game!

So this Monday is when I was planning to start up the game. I have not heard a response from anyone other than our new player. Can I get a shout out on who is still interested in participating? I'll send out PMs to everyone as a reminder and we will see where we are at.

I sent out reminder messages to everyone who mentioned interest before. It was probably not the best idea to try and start it right after an extended holiday weekend. No doubt many people were out of town on vacation.

Keep in mind that this is a game intended to be played daily. You can spend as much or as little time each day on the game but the more time spent tends to lead to victory. At the very least it would be wise to vote in the daily thread. There will be no punishments for inactivity this game.

I am still down. Not depressed, but like, willing to play. Also a little depressed though. I never have enough butterscotch, and that makes me sad.

I'm trying to recruit a few additional players. I would prefer we had 12 to round out the game.
