Kinect and Move Sales Revealed

With both products widely available on the market, sales figures have been released by both Microsoft and Sony.

Just yesterday, Microsoft revealed just how impressive of a success Kinect has been since it hit the market earlier this month. In the 25 days that peripheral has been on the market, 2.5 million units have been sold to consumers around the world.

According to Don Mattrick, President of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, the company is on track to sell through 5 million units this holiday season, Microsoft's forecasted amount.

In response, Sony revealed their numbers, which in typical Sony fashion represent the number of units sold thus far to retail outlets. According to a Sony press release, thus far 4.1 million Move units have been shipped to retail outlets.

The Move has been available for a total of 76 days, which means Sony has shipped roughly 56,000 units to retail each day since its release, 44,000 less than Microsoft is posting for the Kinect. Of course, Microsoft's numbers represent actual consumer sell-through, whereas Sony's are only ship-through to retail outlets.

At this point it's unclear if Microsoft will maintain their predicted momentum, so the comparison isn't completely fair, but seemingly both peripherals are performing strongly in the marketplace this holiday season.

The release of both peripherals combat Nintendo's Wii, which has firmly lead the market since its release four years ago in 2006. Alternative methods of control, including motion control were brought to the forefront when it gained popularity upon release.

Oddly enough, from all that I've seen, my position on the abilities of the Move and Kinect have essentially reversed. Yes, Sony's Move has buttons, but the only read 3D detection I've seen possible is using the ball on the controller. All of Kinect's hacks and demos really serve to show the capabilities of the device, capabilities I wouldn't have believed unless I saw them.
