PixlBit is Hiring!

We have a number of positions available and not all of them require you to write.

Back in 2008 I had the opportunity to realize a longtime dream of mine - writing and reporting on video games. Nintendo World Report afforded me that opportunity, regardless of the fact that I had no experience writing professionally or performing journalistic tasks at all. As we all know, from there, I went on to establish this website, which covers not just Nintendo, but gaming as a whole. Now with my own site, I'd like to offer the opportunity I once had to a fresh generation of game journalists. Here's the great part: you don't need any experience to be eligible for a position and if you aren't the writing type, we have other positions that might suit you.

Right now we're looking for a pretty wide array of positions to incorporate into our dedicated staff. The following is a full list of what we're looking for right now. Each role has multiple positions open, so don't worry about the position being filled before you have a chance to apply. If you don't see something you're interested in on the list, feel free to apply anyway, and let us know what you have a passion to do.

News Writer

This staff position requires a keen eye for gaming news. By checking various beats and scouring the web for information, News Writers will produce stories to inform our readers of what's going on in the gaming world today.

Review Writer (PSP)

This position is a bit more specialized, and won't necessarily be restricted to just reviewing games on the PSP, or even just reviewing games in general. As of right now, I'm the only staff member with a PSP and I'm in desperate need of another staffer with the Sony handheld who can lighten my review workload.

Editor

As of right now, we have a number of writers on staff, but only myself and Chessa handle the editing work. With a growing staff, it will become critical to have editors available who can both grammar check work and suggest effective ways to improve drafted articles so that the best possible product goes live on the site.

Media/Database Maintenance

This position can be very redeeming and requires little-to-no writing, making it an ideal fit for those looking to be a part of a site without the experience or desire to write. Our database and corresponding media require constant attention and could use the watchful eye of a full time monitor. This role will add games to the database, update release dates and other relevant game information, load static media, and upload videos to YouTube. It may seem like a worthless position when taken at face value, but this is what gives the site pop and character.

Podcaster

As you know, PixlTalk is seeing a revival thanks to Jason Ross and Nate Hascup, but they are still in need of weekly members. The host position is still up for grabs, and if we see enough of a demand, we may consider spinning off another crew for a new podcast with a different focus. Those who fill this position will need to perform some basic audio editing, but don't need experience doing it to apply.

Weekly Columnist

Those looking to share their views with the world would fill this position well. We are looking for writers who want to author a weekly column about some topic in gaming. It doesn't have to be anything particular, but the owner of the column should have insightful opinions and discussion provoking writing.

Graphic Designer

PixlBit is always changing and growing in new ways. This position will guide the style of the site and assist me in creation of new site features. Other random graphical work will be available outside of site maintenance tasks. CSS is a big plus and Photoshop/Advanced Editing is a requirement.

As always, we're still looking for the more generalized Staff Writer who wants to be involved with a little bit of everything. Again, if you don't see a position listed here that you think needs filling, let us know and we'll try and find a brand new spot for you.

Typically, we have a pretty in-depth application process, but because we are looking for a number of roles it's a bit harder to have a blanket process. As such, if you are interested, drop us a line at

jobs AT pixlbit DOT com

Send us your Name, Age, Location, Instant Messenger Handle and Client, and the amount of time you think you'll reasonably be able to invest per week (there are no quotas, so be honest).

If you are applying for a writing position, examples of your work will eventually be requested, so feel free to include those in your application, though they are not required up front.

I do wonder, is anonymous saying he would be a biased reviewer?

It's obvious Pixlbit have always favoured the 360.

You never reviewed the 2010 Game of the Year, Heavy Rain, yet you reviewed Alan Wake, a 360 exclusive. Hmmmmm...

There's no Killzone 3 review, but you made bloody well sure you reviewed a generic meathead shooter like the new MoH. Hmmmmm....

You gave the PS3 exclusive Demon's Souls a paltry 3 stars, despite it being the greatest JRPG ever made, whilst the then 360 exclusive Mass Effect 2 gets a near perfect score. Hmmmmm.....

You can fancy yourselves "fair and balanced" all you want, but you're nothing more than the Foxnews of games journos.

"I do wonder, is anonymous saying he would be a biased reviewer?"

Wow, you're SO clever, you know that? /sarcasm

Cool story, bro.

First off, Killzone 3 review is in editing right now (receiving 4.5/5). Sorry, I just had a baby, so it took me a little while to produce the review. Demon's Souls is not an enjoyable game and it got the score it deserved. We weren't provided with a review copy of Heavy Rain and no one on staff happened to pick it up, so it didn't get reviewed. However, Indigo Prophecy is one of my favorite games of the last generation.

As for Medal of Honor, we reviewed the PS3 version :o. Alan Wake? Jason Hillhouse picked that one up out of his own pocket, felt strongly about the content and produced a review. Mass Effect 2, you say? Stanton Daries is a Mass Effect junkie, and I don't think the system he plays it on would change his score in the slightest. Last I checked, a PS3 version of the game is now available, and you can bet that the score applied to the 360 version still applies to the PS3 just the same.

You do understand that there are many reviewers on staff, and they each represent a different opinion from the next? We're also not paid to do this, so we predominantly review games provided to us by publishers, and games we buy with our own money. If we didn't review a game, it's because we didn't get a review copy of it and no one on staff sprung for a copy themselves.

Also, just for you, here are our review averages per system:

PS3: 3.42

Wii: 3.38

360: 3.34

Very little variance from system to system, and PS3 is the highest.

The next time you're going to spout nonsense, make sure you know what you're talking about.

While I wouldn't always agree with Nick on some stuff, the only way he's biased of the 360 is that he prefers the 360 controller over the PS3 controller ;), but in terms of games I think that he's a pretty fair guy. If he loves a game, he will give it a really good score, if he thinks it sucks then it's going to be panned.

Regarding 360 blame the industry and Sony on that one. The 360 became the defacto standard for multiplatform games, and it's very common that 360 versions of multiplatform games or 360 games in general get reviewed more often since there are more of them. Also, it's typical that a majority of multiplatform games are simply better on 360 since the 360 version was most likely the lead platform. The reason to blame Sony - they fumbled so many times ever since launch, and it took them a few years to even recover. If Sony didn't do so poorly the generation, the PS3 would of probably been the defacto standard for multiplatform games and there probably would of been more PS3 games than 360 games.

Hey Caliban, didn't see your message there when I replied to the Anon Troll or else I would've addressed it first.

If you aren't confident enough in your writing, why not try your hand at the Media/DB Maintenance position for a start? Maybe once you feel more comfortable, we can easily transition you to a different position. If you are legitimately interested, let me provide you with some confidence: give it a shot, I'm sure you'll do great.

How'd you know Nick loves the whole "Derpa Derpa Derpa" Rob Schneider thing? That's incredible.

At any rate, I don't even have a 360. You should have seen the tweets Nick and I sent out during their E3 press conference. We definitely weren't fond of that experience.

Anyway, for what it's worth, if we favor anything, it's Nintendo games, which is partially why we're looking for someone out there to review PSP games. Before Stanton joined the staff, we hardly had anyone out there to review 360 stuff. That said, I've seen Nintendo fans say we're biased against the Wii, Sony fans say we're biased against Sony, and 360 fans suggest the same about their console, so at this point, I imagine it's a matter of perspective.

If you are ever curious to see if PixlBit will be reviewing a game, leave a post on the forums about the game and ask if we will be. I'll make sure to find out the answer for you, though if it's "No," that could always change in the future.

And Matt, close your tag!

Hell, I'd give Mass Effect 2 a 5 on the PS3 if Bioware sent it to me. I don't even own a PS3 but I would... Please Bioware? Return my calls!

"Demon's Souls a paltry 3 stars, despite it being the greatest JRPG ever made".

Greatest JRPG? I highly disagree. I'll give that honor to the awesomely titled "Tales of Game's Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa". And if you don't know it, shame on you. :D

Looks like you guys got a fanatic PS3 fanboy on your hands, haha. (For what it's worth, I own a PS3 and think you guys are doing a great job, keep it up!)
