New Nintendo Console Announcement at E3?

According to "reliable sources" a new Nintendo console is on the way.

Big news came today for the gaming community as reports came in that Nintendo will be announcing a brand new console at E3, or maybe even sooner.

According to Gameinformer, multiple reliable sources have confirmed the existence of a brand new Nintendo console, one that will finally have the capability to display HD games.

However, the sources weren't specific as to whether or not the graphics will be comparable to, or better than, the PS3 and Xbox 360. As of now they are merely considered "competitive."

Whether or not the new system will be backwards compatible with the Wii is currently unknown, as rumors indicate that Nintendo will likely be creating a new brand with the unit.

An anonymous source commented on the system by stating it "isn't a gimmick like the Wii," and that "Nintendo is doing this one right." The ambiguous comment has left many gamers wondering whether the system will only feature improved graphical capabilities, or if there will be a unique aspect to the system like its Wii predecessor

According to the sources, Nintendo has already shown the system off to publishers in order to provide ample time to begin game development. Late last year Nintendo President Satoru Iwata commented on the need for better publishing partners. He stated that they want to have a close relationship with third-party developers from the get-go, that way they "decrease the concern that only Nintendo software can sell well on Nintendo platforms and third-party software cannot sell in the same volume."

When contacted for an official statement regarding the rumor, Nintendo replied by stating "Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation."

I think just about everyone was expecting to hear something like this. I also think an anonymous source stating it "...isn't a gimmick like the Wii" is someone who's out of touch with the reality of the gaming market, in many senses, so I'm not sure if I'd trust that individual source all that much, either.

While I know this is a rumor and nothing else, I am somewhat glad to see something happening. But this talk about "hardcore" crowd is very VERY unappealing to me. Nintendo tried doing this in the Gamecube era, and it didn't do much at all. Nintendo is a company for everyone, so yeah.

Still, Wii2(whatever the hell you will be named) with HD Mario plz thk u.

I'm gonna call BS to most of the crap floating around the internet coming from so called 'anonymous sources'. A number of the links to references on some of these articles are just circling around each other and the initial breakouts coming from 'reputable news outlets' (read: big sites that do tend to get these sorts of juicy tidbits) are obviously embellishing to much the weight of the anonymous industry folks.

Also the number of separate reports varying wildly on concepts, features and spec estimations make me doubt these possibilities even more. Really I'm only going to take one thing rumored this last week as more than a grain of salt to season my dreams: Nintendo will reveal something of substance regarding their next console. It may be just the name. Perhaps just how the system itself looks like or a full blown reveal including games and demos. But all this talk strikes me as merely a few fanboy wet dreams catching fire in the flurry or pre-E3 excitement. Combine that with us media folk eager to get the jump on the word and we get pure prediction pandemonium.

I'm going to have to agree with Nate on this. Typically every year the game media latches onto something before E3 that is going to be revealed there. There is a lot of contradictions amongst the rumors so I'm just going wait and see if all these rumors are true and if they are not true I'm not going to jump up and down and put blame on Nintendo or any such thing like that.
