DC Universe Online Going Free to Play Soon

The transition from subscription to pay as you go gets a date.

It’s a good time to be a comic book fan. DC has been riding high on the huge success of the reboot of their entire universe with the New 52, and Batman: Arkham City is tearing up the sales charts. Now you can add one more reason for DC fans to rejoice, as DC Universe Online is going free to play, and we finally have a date for when that transition will happen.

As it turns out, you will be able to roll a new hero for no cost next week. That’s November 1st, to be exact. Now, you’re probably wondering how that free to play model works, and we have the answers for you. The game will be broken down into three tiers:

The Free tier is just that; download the game (PC or PS3), create a character, and go. There are a number of restrictions on Free characters, however. You’ll have no access to the auction house, limited slots for inventory, and you won’t have the ability to trade. Chatting is also restricted to text-only, and you’ll only be able to send a message every 30 seconds. No doubt this is to dissuade real money traders that creep into every MMO at some point.

Spend at least five dollars or more on microtransactions (additional character slots, inventory slots, auction house access, etc.) and you’ll be bumped up to Premium status. This increases the max number of character, bank, and inventory slots, and allows voice chat with other players, but only when you’re in close proximity to them.

Legendary mode will retain the 14.99 monthly subscription rate, and you’ll have full access to everything DCUO has to offer, including DLC add-ons, which can be purchased by Premium and Free users.

So check out DC Universe Online when it goes free to play next week! And pick up some New 52 comics while you’re at it; new comic book day is November 2nd.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Review

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an entry in the Metroid Prime series - 18 years, in fact. It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
