New Assassin's Creed Game Coming Next Year

The only sure things are death, taxes, and Assassin's Creed.

Since the release of the first game in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has gone on to become one of Ubisoft’s most successful game franchises ever. Assassin’s Creed II was released in 2009, and since then there has been a major release in the series every year. Don’t expect that to change in 2012, as a new game in the popular stealth-action series is due to be released about a year from now.

In a conference call with investors today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that a new entry in the series will be coming to stores next fall. “There will be another great, full-fledged Assassin’s Creed title next year,” he said at the call. “It will be another major release and we will be communicating more about it in the coming months.”

While Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will be the conclusion of Ezio’s story (the main character of the game since AC II), the story of Desmond will continue into the next game. Desmond, of course, is the descendent of Ezio and Altair, the assassin from the first game. After that, the annual nature of the games should ease up a bit, according to Alexandre Amacio, creative lead on Revelations.

*The only sure things are death, taxes, Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed. Oh, also Madden.

Well Revelations will be in for review on Thursday. I'm looking forward to it, despite the fact that I don't think much will be different from Brotherhood.

This next installment described here that will conclude Desmond's story is most interesting to me, though I sincerely hope they capitalize on the fact that he's in the current modern world. If you don't do some crazy parkour type stuff in a modern urban environment, I'll be extremely disappointed.

I am totally ready for a break after that entry though. I think Ubisoft went a little overboard with the series after 2, but they're committed to it now, so I'm glad they'll see it through and understand the value of a break.

I own the first game, but I haven't played it yet. I'm really curious to play them, but at this point there are so many games that I feel like I've missed the boat. But if the next game is set in feudal Japan I might be on board, as my dream is to have this team make the next Tenchu game.
