Another Day Another Sales Record Broken by Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare 3 sells a bajillion copies on day one.

We all knew that the launch of Modern Warfare 3 was going to be big, but I’m sure most wouldn’t have thought that the game would clear over $400 million in its first 24 hours of release. From just two territories.

In a press release, Activision released official numbers for Modern Warfare’s first day of sales in both North America and Europe. Those sales equated to 6.5 million units finding their way into gamers’ homes. The $400 million taken in by Activision from these sales shatters the previous record holder, last year’s Black Ops with $360 million, and secured title of best single day debut of any kind of media.

"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. "Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings," two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Stay tuned to PixlBit for our upcoming review of Modern Warfare 3 which hit the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC earlier this week.

I still don't understand the appeal in these games that makes everyone and their brother rush out to get it on day one. They're solid shooters for what they do, but I wouldn't say they're anything special, and could certainly name better shooters.

Seems like it's pretty safe to say the industry is very healthy. How can you go wrong with, "...biggest entertainment launch of all time, in any medium..."
