Infinity Ward Bans 1600 Modern Warfare 3 Cheaters

The Ban Hammer taketh away...

Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling announced on Twitter that over 1600 bans have been given out to those who cheat in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The bans were issued to stop "Any attempt to cheat, hack, or glitch" the game.

Bowling also confirmed that updates are in the works to fix some of the glitches and encourages players to identify those who exploit these glitches.

As someone who is part of a competitive (non-FPS) community I find this unsettling. If you hack the game, sure, that's a bit different; you're altering it on purpose. If you find a glitch in the game, and use it to your advantage, that's absolutely not a bad thing.

If it's a glitch that lets you press XYBBA and win the whole map, fine, that's game-breaking. If it's something that lets you get more experience, like in, what was it, Battlefield 3? That shouldn't be a bannable offense.

Fix the glitch, sure, but don't punish the player for playing the game the way YOU don't want them to. Especially when their ability to do so is a result of your mistake.
