Rumor: Dante's Inferno 2 in the Works?

Former Assassin's Creed 2 writer possibly continuing the virtual Divine Comedy.

As we get to the end of 2011 and start our Game of the Year Deliberations, the industry at large is starting to peek into the future. We can expect plenty of big games, be they remakes, new IPs, or sequels. One of those sequels could very well be part two of the Divine Comedy. That is, a sequel to the 2009 release of Dante’s Inferno by Visceral Games.

The rumor comes from the bio page of Joshua Rubin, who is credited as being a co-writer for Assassin’s Creed II. According to his biography, Rubin is the sole writer for a “Major Unannounced Sequel from Visceral Studios at EA Games.” Now, we’ve already reported some early information on Dead Space 3, but Rubin puts a not-so-subtle hint in the post, which is a link to the Super Bowl ad for Dante’s Inferno.

In May of 2010, a job posting at Visceral pointed to work on a sequel to a major IP at the company. Considering that production on Dead Space 2 was already winding down at that point, the money was put on a sequel to Dante. The first game garnered solid reviews upon release, and sold around 500,000 copies between the PS3 and 360 editions in the first month at retail. We will, as always, let you know when we have more concrete information.

It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
