The Witcher Developer Speaks Out Against Piracy

CD Projekt RED stops their actions against pirates, but wants gamers to take a stand.

Piracy is the bane of the video game industry. Various companies have tried different ways to combat piracy, from the complex instruction manuals in old PC games to Ubisoft’s controversial DRM that requires their games to be online at all times, regardless of if the game is multiplayer or not. CD Projekt RED, developers of The Witcher series, have taken a firm stand against DRM, but that shouldn’t imply that they turn a blind eye to piracy. That had caused them to try a pretty drastic measure, but today, the company has backed down.

That drastic measure was an aggressive witch hunt for people that pirated their games to pay a hefty fee out of court, or face an expensive legal battle. While it’s understandable that the developer would want to punish people who have stolen their games, this is clearly the wrong way to go about it. The website Rock, Paper, Shotgun spoke out against this action by CD Projekt RED, and it seems to have done the trick.

In an open letter to the gaming community, CD Projekt RED announced that they have immediately ceased identifying and contacting pirates. They reiterate that they do not condone piracy, and ask the gaming community to take a stand against it.
