Metal Gear Rising Confirmed at E3

We'll have a hands-on in June. Plus, the mystery director has been revealed.

It’s been a whirlwind of news revolving around Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. After it’s announced rebranding and reveal of development by Platinum games at the Spike TV VGAs, Hideo Kojima has gone on a massive PR-like tour. He’s been seen in publications all over the world lately, and in the newest Famitsu, he revealed some interesting news about the new action game.

First off, Revengeance is expected to be playable at E3 later this year. While that may seem like a foregone conclusion, keep in mind that Metal Gear Rising had been in development for quite some time before Platinum took over, and very few people had seen the game in playable form. We’ll definitely have a lot to say about the game when we get our hands on it in June.

Kojima also confirmed who the mystery director of Rising is, reiterating that he is not involved in the game at all. The main man behind Raiden’s new adventure is Kenji Saito. Saito has been with Platinum since the beginning, and worked with Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya on Viewtiful Joe. It had been long rumored that Kamiya was the director of Rising, but he had repeatedly denied this idea. Kenji Saito was the lead programmer on Bayonetta, which explains the familiar look that Rising has in comparison to that game.

Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
