RUMOR: Microsoft Discontinuing Microsoft Points?

Rumor has it that the virtual currency system will be abandoned by year's end.

According to a source within the company, Microsoft's virtual currency system, Microsoft Points, will be phased out by the end of 2012. This will be implemented for Windows Phone, the Zune Marketplace and, of course, Xbox Live. At the end of 2012, all transactions will be based on each region's respective currency.

Inside Mobile Apps asked Microsoft for further information but a spokesperson responded with “we do not comment on rumours or speculation.”

The rumor continues to say that customers with existing Microsoft Points balances will have them converted into their local currency after the switch has been made. Right now, the point system isn't fully utilized across all platforms as you can buy games on the 360 and apps on Windows Phone with real money.

I wish Microsoft had done this sooner. I still have 10 points on my account that I'll never use. I hope this rumor proves to be true.

I've had a 360 since 2006 and never used a single Microsoft point. I've never understood them or had them explained to me. To me they seem silly, like Disney dollars lol. I'll be happy if the create something else, hopefully better, than the MS Point system.

When 1up started the process of shutting down, there was one person who seemed to lead to charge to congregate the community in a single place. After his first visit here, it wasn't long before a slew of new members arrived. The site came alive and the real story of PixlBit began - the one that involves all of you. The person I'm referring to is, of course, Michael Alvarado, otherwise known as Michael117.
