5TH CELL UNVEILS NEW DETAILS ON HYBRID
The Developers Finally Talk About a Year’s Worth of Iteration
Bellevue, Wash. – January 31, 2012 – 5TH Cell, creators of the critically acclaimed titles Scribblenauts and Run Roo Run, are proud to bring you new details and updates of their upcoming XBLA title Hybrid.
Hybrid is a pioneering third person shooter set in the near future, where global conflict exists between a species known as the Variant and a rebel human faction known as the Paladins. 5TH Cell strives to give players a completely new gameplay experience never seen before in the genre.
After giving their first hands-on to overwhelmingly positive reviews in early 2011, 5TH Cell made the decision to give the title an extra year of development time, iterating on all previously existing components, and introducing several new ones. “This extra year has been really useful in refining Hybrid to become a truly ‘5TH Cell’ game,” said CEO and Creative Director, Jeremiah Slaczka. “Everyone on the team has been working extremely hard and we’re all incredibly proud of what’s been accomplished.”
- Revamped Combat Focused Movement
Players now fly directly from cover to cover with the push of a button. While in flight, the player has free control of the hero’s horizontal and vertical movement, speed, specific landing location, and the ability to engage in combat.
- New Look
Completely redesigned look featuring new characters, more detailed and varied environments, and polished interface, all running at 60FPS at 720p.
- World Map
Players fight in a persistent online world war where every battle matters, collectively building bases for the Paladins or Variant to help their faction conquer the earth.
- Deep Customization
Mix and match weapons, abilities, and specialties on the fly.
Hybrid will be available in Summer 2012 for Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA).
Awesome! I think it looks beautiful and fun. I'm not sure why they are flying around, it doesn't appear to be a zero-g environment, but I guess the more important question is, "Why not fly around?". I'd rather the game be super fun and have a dicey story or concept than the other way around. It appears to have a cover system and I hope conventional movement on the ground is available, but with that said I'm glad there is a focus on the flying and less conventional movement. You can fly to cover, shoot while moving and flying, and do lots of cool things it seems. That makes it distinct and seperate from Gears of War and other 3rd person shooters with a cover system.
I was also intrigued by the screens showing the upgrades or strategy/rpg elements of the design. It appears you have a rank, gain experience, can upgrade weapons, upgrade bases, strengthen drones (not sure what they are yet), complete tasks to gain in game credits similar to Halo Reach, and there are kill streaks and elements similar to a CoD. Looks like they're going for a shooter with a fresh spin on mechanics, combat strategy, and lots of replayability. I'd love to play this and see what it's all about.

Just watched some coverage of the beta and it's an interesting take on the genre. I'm not completely sold on the idea but it's definitely on my radar now.
