Final Fantasy X HD a Remaster, Not a Remake

The speculation has come to an end.

Ahead of Tokyo Games Show 2011, Square Enix surprised fans with the announcement of an upcoming HD version of Final Fantasy X. At the time, however, no information about the game was announced otherwise - including whether the game was to be a remake of the PlayStation 2 title or a remaster. Square Enix has put the speculation to bed with their latest announcement - Final Fantasy X HD is a remaster.

Though not a remake, producer Shinji Hashimoto explained that "the screen is much prettier than the original," implying that the game does look noticeably better than the original. It's expected that more press on the PlayStation 3 and Vita releases will be revealed soon.

I guess I just assumed that's what this is from the announcement. Final Fantasy X is one of my favorites in the series, and I can't wait for the PS3 version.

@Julian Hey Jules is this the FF game that you were telling me I should play? I was talking about how much I love LotR: The Third Age and you were telling me to check out a particular FF game because The Third Age rips the combat system wholesale. If FFX is the one, I'll definitely get it and play it, probably for PS2 though. I'm thinking about getting a PS2 again like I used to have back in the day, and building a collection of the games I loved as well as the games I never player (I missed a metric ton of awesome games back in the PS2 cycle). I'll be able to find FFX on Amazon pretty easily I'm sure, if that's the game you were talking about.

This is the one! The voice acting is awkward by today's standards, but the battle system is one of my favorites in the series.

I admit: I haven't played this one yet. =(

So what other factors would it take to make it a re-make (no rhyme intended..)? Dual audio (for those who want to listen to the original Japanese dub)? Online content?

It would be a remake if they made the assets from the ground up. All they did was take the existing textures and video and convert them to HD resolutions. That's the main difference between a "remake" and a "remaster" or "enhanced port," with this game being the later.

Content doesn't really factor into what is a remake and what is an enhamced port, but it does mean that people tend to use these labels incorrectly.
