Double Dragon: Neon Announced For XBLA, PSN

The reboot will feature an '80s neon style.

Double Dragon has already seen several reboots over the years. There was the Game Boy Advance title, Double Dragon Advance, that released back in 2003, an XBLA HD version from 2007, and an iOS version released just this past year. All of them are based on the original arcade game, which turns 25 this year. Enter Double Dragon: Neon, the latest remake in the series.

Developer Wayforward Technologies has revealed that they are working with Majesco to produce a new take on the original Double Dragon game, which will be released on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this July.

You'll play as the game's famous protagonists, Billy and Jimmy Lee, as they fight thugs and henchmen trying to save Marian, who has been kidnapped by the evil Skullmageddon. Aside from the different villian, the game will be the same side-scrolling beat-'em-up the original was, only with bright '80s neon aesthetics.

Gameplay will consists of basic martial arts combat with various weapons like whips and grenades available to pick up. A grid-like system for upgrading your abilities will be implemented using mix-tapes, but no further explanation or details about it have been revealed.

The visuals will offer plenty of neon lights and bright colors (as the name implies) and other tacky and excessive set pieces evocative of the 1980s. The game's soundtrack will follow suit, offering both Synth Pop and Glam Metal tracks.

Wayforward Technologies is known for already creating some reboots of popular video games franchise such as Contra 4 and BloodRayne: Betrayal, as well as original work, like the SNES throwback, Mighty Switch Force. Though recently delayed, Silent Hill: Book of Memories is also en route from the studio.
