This looks pretty cool, very excited to see how it develops.
Seems like we're in some sort of Sci-Fi gaming renaissance lately. Deus Ex, Syndicate, Watch Dogs, Mass Effect Trilogy and this. Good stuff.
Brand new IP emphasizes the role of memory swapping.
Today at Gamescom 2012, Capcom officially announced a brand new IP set in futuristic Neo Paris, known as Remember Me. The title, which has been announced for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, will star a female protagonist known as Nilin who is described as a “memory hunter.”
Remember Me depicts a future where nothing is a secret. This is because in Nilin's world, people can swap memories with others as long as they have the money to pay for it. Essentially, for the right price, you can learn anything about anyone. Unfortunately for Nilin, her memory was wiped unwillingly and now she’s on a quest to find out why.
Capcom describes Remember Me as an action/adventure game with a heavy emphasis on acrobatic traversal and agile combat. One of the interesting hooks is something known as “Memory Remixing” that allows players to “hack” the minds of other people and alter their memories. Doing this can have varying effects which may alter their thought process. One gameplay trailer shows Nilin remixing the memory of a Frank Forlan, where she convinced him that he accidentally killed his girlfriend, which in turn made him kill himself.
The title, once known as Adrift, is being developed by Dontnod Entertainment out of Paris. The company was established by former members of Criterion Games, best known for their work on the Burnout series.
Currently the game is slated for a May 2013 release, so players interested should expect to hear more as the release approaches. In the meantime, be sure to check out the below trailers.
I love sci-fi, so it's nice to see more sci-fi games and settings come back. For a couple generations the only great sci-fi universe and series I could count on showing up regularly was Halo. I love Half Life too, but you never know when you'll get one of those. Everybody else has been going off in the gritty, earthy, blood, rape, and terrorism vibe whether its CoD, Tomb Raider, Last of Us, GTA, etc. With newer games like Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Watch Dogs, etc, it's nice to see that Halo isn't alone in holding the sci-fi and/or space opera flags. Sci-fi is great, but what I'm even more excited to see is how popular stealth-action has been becoming again. As well as all the acrobatic platforming we are seeing in games.
My favorite part of any combat based gameplay design is "the hunt", and the best hunts happen in stealth action games. Designing games in the stealth action fashion allows you to still make an action packed combat game, but in a different way that lets you get away from the square-room-to-square-room run and gun design of Doom. I love it when characters are programmed with tasks to keep them busy so that they aren't just waiting for you when you enter a room. I also love it when environments are built to give you a few ways to sneak around and observe an area and all the people in it. Being able to observe characters, learn about them, stalk them, and either kill them, knock them out, manipulate them, or avoid them, is good stealth action. Games like the Crysis series definitely understand that, and newer IPs like Dishonored, Watch Dogs, and Remember Me seem to understand how to make a good hunt.
This game looks gorgeous, but that gameplay demo left me totally cold. The way she just starts climbing around with no reaction from the NPCs is a concern for me. But more than that is the part where she remixes the target's memory. It looks like trial by failure gameplay, and that can get old really fast.
But it's Capcom and it's a new IP, so I'm on board for now.
