Modern Warfare 2 Had Campaign Co-op

The mode was dropped in favor of the Spec Ops co-operative mode.

The developers of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward, recently revealed in an interview with VG247 that the title originally featured a Campaign co-operative mode.

Rob Bowling claims that the mode was dropped in favor of the current co-op Spec Ops Mode because "it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything [they’d] spent so long crafting." He goes on to say that "it just ruined the experience [they] were aiming for, so [they] took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it."

Because the team still wanted a co-operative mode they decided to take the "moments that were really fun with two players ... and put them in Spec Ops."

The Spec Ops mode will include segments taken directly from the single player campaign but are refined to work with two players. According to Bowling, "you really get the best of both worlds: you get the moments that were fun, but the moments that were shitty we took out."

Modern Warfare 2 will be available for the PS3, 360, and PC on November 10.

Hey, know what would've also been a good idea? Letting the mode be unlocked after the first Campaign playthrough! Simple and effective.

Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
