Keita Takahasi Discusses His Disappointment With Noby Noby Boy

Apparently Noby Noby Boy was supposed to be much more.

In a recent interview, Keita Takahashi (creator of Katamari Damacy) discussed the state of the gaming industry in Japan and his disappointment with Noby Noby Boy.

The interview began with a discussion concerning the Japanese gaming market, and according to Takahashi, "the industry as a whole is pretty much going downhill in Japan." When asked why he thought this might be he replied, "Since the global games market has matured now, gamers always expect something to be put in front of them." He continued on to explain that the issue was a problem with quantity over quality, with content being "driven by [demand] rather than ideas."

Continuing onward, the focus shifted towards Noby Noby Boy, and Takahasi's personal feelings on how the game turned out. While Takahashi stated that just getting the game released was in itself "an achievement for sure" he believes that "more could have been done to the game" which is why he is "not completely satisfied with the game, in terms of quality."

According to Takahashi, one of the larger problems with the game was the lack of a proper budget, leaving the developers to make due. Takahashi states that there was "a really long list of things" that he wanted to include in the game, which would have made it "much more detailed and easier for everyone to understand."

Takahashi concluded the topic of Noby Noby Boy by stating, "Ultimately, with Noby Noby Boy, I wanted to break the barriers between toy and game."

I wonder how the game did overall. It seemed to have gained a following, but it looks like the issues they faced might affect overall sales.
