PlayStation 4 to Ditch Cell Processor?

An industry insider claims that the chip may no longer be the optimal solution for Sony's next home console.

As players might expect, Sony has already started considering the future of the their PlayStation console, and where they might go with its fourth home iteration.

According to technology writer, Hiroshige Goto at Impress Watch, Sony will be moving away from the Cell processor for the PS4.

When the PlayStation 3 originally released, the company identified a number of problems programmers were having with developing for the system. They identified these issues and started planning for a second iteration of the chip that alleviated the issues.

This may be more work than its worth for the company as they are looking into a more standard multicore design as seen in most current home computers.

Goto was not able to elaborate further on the insider knowledge he had acquired, and there is no confirmation that reports thus far are anything more than rumors.
