Bethesda Hits the $300 Million Jackpot in Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas Ships 5 Million copies and stores are already placing orders for more. Physical and digital sales combined are over $300 million.

Today Bethesda Softworks announced something unsurprising: New Vegas, the latest release in the Fallout series sold a lot of copies. Combined numbers of the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions shipped-to-date is recorded at 5 million. You can write off those numbers as 'shipped' versus sold, but Bethesda has already received numerous requests for new shipments from their retail partners.

Bethesda also claims to have already raked in $300 million from New Vegas sales from both physical sales and digital downloads. At this rate, New Vegas is set to surpass Fallout 3 sales.

I can hear the sound of Scrooge McDuck swimming in a bin full of money.

I love the "abstract" line of the press release for this:

"Bethesda Softworks Announces Successful Launch of Fallout®: new vegasTM "

I know they raked in millions and millions of dollars, but it got me thinking, what are the ways a launch can be unsuccessful?

Is it when it sells less than about 500 copies, a la Spyborgs, sure, but I don't even mean sales-wise. What could (or has) ruin(ed) the success of a game's launch?

Bugs. But that didn't stop New Vegas considering the word on the street is that it has an awful lot of them. I know that the first Aliens Vs. Predators game on PC released without a save feature. The backlash forced them to add one in a patch.

How about burglaries? That can foil a launch. People stealing hundreds of copies of the game.

Like Black Ops? You wanna cover that story or do you want me to do it tonight after work?

Great. Maybe now they can start developing a new, better game engine.
