Upcoming Downtime - June 9, 2013

Sorry for the short notice again.

Hi guys. As I'm sure you've observed, the site has been running uncharacteristically slow since the big release I did the other night. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to diagnose the issue despite countless attempts. The issue is coming from the database, which is not performing as it did before the code release, which is something of a conundrum to me. However, I have hope that an upgrade to the database software will make the situation better.

Kiefer Sutherland To Play Snake in MGS V

David Hayter is out. Or is he??

Konami held their big “Pre-E3” presentation today, but considering all of the buzz around new consoles, the company didn’t have much to show. Besides showcasing how the new Fox Engine is implemented in the PES soccer franchise and an extended look at Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, the big news came from Hideo Kojima, who announced that Kiefer Sutherland (24, The Lost Boys) would be playing Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Site Maintenance Tonight - June 5

Super short notice... sorry guys!

Well, I've been meaning to post about this all day, but it's been hectic and I didn't have internet connection for the majority of it. Regardless, I have some intense site maintenance that I'm going to be performing tonight around 11:59 PM EST. As such, the site will be unavailable for around 15 to 30 minutes.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom Review Rewind

So this is what happens when you cross My Buddy with My Pet Monster. (Old man joke is old.)

When was the last time you smiled while playing a video game? I don’t mean because you were laughing at a funny line of dialogue or because you killed some dumb noob in a multiplayer game. I’m talking about playing a game that made you feel so good that you had a smile of satisfaction on your face the entire time. That’s the feeling I had during much of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, a gem of a game that was overlooked almost across the board when it was released in 2010.

Reus Review

God is in the details.

Playing bad games is no fun, but what’s even worse is playing a game that’s amazing and then takes a sudden nosedive in enjoyment from which it never recovers. Even though it never falls far enough to be a bad game, Reus sure plummets from the heights of fun into the ho-hum zone. A god game with a complex series of interacting systems, Reus seems to have done most everything right until you advance in the game far enough to turn it into a tedious and anal retentive planning exercise.

SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition Review

Obvious game has obvious problems.

If you were to ask a thousand people for a 3D game idea, every last one of them would come up with SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition. Some ideas might have a little less hyper and some a little less X, but the same concept would be blurted out of the mouths of everyone polled. That’s no reason to dismiss the idea of a game where you zip through a tunnel and dodge obstacles, because the concept is a pretty solid one with a lot of potential.  SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition takes this obvious idea and gives it an entirely acceptable treatment, proving that this is a completely viable game idea – it’s just not very exciting.

Fighting Fundamentals with JD - Learning the Basics

Blocking, BnB’s and More.

You’ve got your game and you’ve got your character, so the next step is potentially one of the most difficult – learning the basics. At this point, assuming you’ve fiddled around with the game, and at least have a handle on the game’s systems, there is still a lot to learn in terms of playing the game properly. Learning the basics at times makes people feel like they don’t know how to play the game at all. It can be frustrating, but the payoff is well worth it, because not only will it you progress in your game of choice, but it will improve your success rate with many other fighting games.

Metro: Last Light Review

Light at the end of the tunnel.

Metro: Last Light's first achievement may be the fact it exists. As a sequel to an atmospheric first-person shooter adapted from Russian literature, it was already a risky game before development even started. Bad working conditions, delayed release, and THQ's bankruptcy followed. Yet despite everything going against it, Last Light has emerged from the darkness to become one of the year's best games so far.
